Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response identifies the two years and mentions several relevant activities, including work, sleep, travel and socialising. However, the overview is inaccurate: it says sleeping was among the largest uses of time in both years, but work was the largest in 2008, and it does not clearly summarise the main changes. Some figures are omitted or confused: the 1958 difference between work and sleep was one percentage point, but the response does not give their actual shares; it also says adults spent time playing sports in 1958, although that category appears only in 2008. The 2008 activities are described as almost equal, despite work being much higher. Report the key figures accurately and compare the major rises and falls.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic structure, with an opening, an overview-like statement and separate paragraphs for 1958 and 2008. This gives the reader some sense of the two periods being discussed. However, progression within the paragraphs is weak: the 1958 paragraph moves between sleep, travel, work, socialising and home time without a clear comparison, while the 2008 paragraph repeats work and sleep information. Linking phrases such as “On one side” and “On the other hand” are used mechanically and do not clarify the relationships between figures. Improve the organisation by giving a concise overview first, then grouping the main increases and decreases, using comparisons to connect related data.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response uses some relevant topic vocabulary, including “sleeping,” “travelling to work,” “working hours” and “going out with friends and family.” This is enough to communicate the general subject, but the range is limited and several expressions are inaccurate or awkward, such as “a youngster” for working adults, “a quality of time in home,” and “lexiure of time.” Repetition of “spent” and “time” also makes the description less precise. Choose standard chart language and accurate activity labels, for example “the proportion of the day spent working” or “time devoted to leisure.” Check spelling and collocations, and use verbs such as “rose,” “fell” and “accounted for” to describe changes clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts a few complex links, including “Whereas, in contrast to this,” and uses time references to distinguish the years. However, sentence structures are limited, and frequent errors affect clarity. Examples include “in both year most of the adults spending,” which lacks correct agreement and a finite verb, and “the working hours is highest,” where the subject and verb do not agree. Several sentences begin with “and,” and punctuation is inconsistent, as in “family. and they also…” Articles and prepositions are also often missing or misplaced. Practise forming complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check agreement, tense and punctuation when describing each chart.
