Student answer (Band 6.0)
The charts depict the distribution of working adults' time in a specific country in 1958 and 2008.
Overall, the time expenditure for working, relaxing, travelling to work have increased, while going out with friends/family and sleeping have decreased. Additionally, playing sports has remained unchanged throughout the period.
Working accounted for 33% in 1958 increased to 43% in 2008. Despite relaxing being at 8% in 1958, it increased to 13% in 2008. Meanwhile, travelling to work almost tripled from 8% in 1958 to 13% in 2008.
In contrast, going out with friends/family decreased more than two-third, 19% in 1958 to 6% in 2008. Moreover, sleeping also saw a downward trend, from 32% in 1958 to one-fourth in 2008. Although every activities compromised some changes, playing sports remained unchanged throughout both the years, 1958 and 2008, at 7%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main broad changes and include several relevant figures, such as working rising from 33% to 43% and social outings falling from 19% to 6%. However, some data are inaccurate: commuting was 2% in 1958 and 7% in 2008, not 8% and 13%, and sports is shown only for 2008, so it cannot be described as unchanged. The overview also says travelling increased, which is correct, but the claim that sports remained unchanged is unsupported. Sleeping fell from 32% to 25%, rather than “one-fourth” as an exact figure. The response is 14 words below the required minimum, limiting the opportunity to report the chart fully. Check each figure against the chart and develop the overview around the largest changes.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a summary of the main trends, and two paragraphs comparing increases and decreases. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Meanwhile,” and “In contrast” help readers follow the comparisons, and the information is generally grouped sensibly. This coherent structure meets the expected standard, with some evidence of more controlled progression. However, the overview’s claim that sports remained unchanged conflicts with the later detail and with the chart, weakening the connection between summary and evidence. The final sentence also repeats the sports point rather than adding a useful comparison. To strengthen progression further, group the figures more consistently and ensure each overview statement is supported by the details that follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “distribution,” “accounted for,” “downward trend,” and “decreased.” These choices make the main comparisons understandable, and you vary some wording rather than relying entirely on “increased” and “decreased.” There are, however, several inaccurate or unnatural expressions. “Time expenditure for working” is awkward for describing a share of the day, while “almost tripled” does not accurately describe the commuting figures given in the chart. “Decreased more than two-third” is also an imprecise phrase, and “compromised some changes” is not an appropriate collocation. Aim for precise language such as “the proportion of time spent commuting” and “fell by roughly two-thirds,” while checking that the wording matches the data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex forms, including a contrast clause beginning “Although” and sentences using “while” and “Despite.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. In “Working accounted for 33% in 1958 increased to 43%,” the two clauses need a connector or a full stop. “Although every activities” has a number-agreement error, and “playing sports remained unchanged … at 7%” needs a clearer grammatical construction. The sentence beginning “Despite relaxing being at 8%” is also awkwardly formed. Practise joining comparisons with structures such as “Working accounted for 33% in 1958, before rising to 42% in 2008,” and check agreement and clause boundaries when editing.
