Student answer (Band 5.0)

The chart demonstartes grown ups in a country spent their time between 1958 to 2008 on multiple activities. Overall, in a day, proportion of working & sleeping actvities done by adolesence are more while working activity kept increasing and sleeping is gradually falling down.

In the year 1958, working people were 33% whereas sleeping took second place by 32%. Third place was taken by going out with friends / family. The least place was taken by travelling to work and by relaxing at home.

On the other hand, in the year 2008 it is clear cut evident that working people started increasing steadily by 42 % whereas sleeping majority was slightly falling down. Surprisingly, people who were relaxing at home began to rise by 13 %. Playing sports and Travelling to work were linear, going out with friends / family was the last thing any one would do.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify several relevant features, including the rise in working time from 33% to 42%, the fall in sleeping from 32% to 25%, and the low share for going out in 2008. However, the overview is unclear and includes an inaccurate reference to “adolesence”; the charts concern working adults. Some comparisons are incomplete or imprecise: travelling and relaxing are described as the “least” in 1958 without reporting their figures, and “Playing sports and Travelling to work were linear” does not explain that sports appears only in 2008, at 7%, while travel rises from 2% to 7%. The response is also two words below the required minimum. Include a concise overview and accurately report the main changes and key figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic structure, moving from an introduction and overview to a paragraph about 1958 and then one about 2008. This gives the reader some sense of how the information is organised. However, progression within the paragraphs is uneven, and several links are unclear or mechanical. For example, “On the other hand” suggests a contrast, but the following paragraph mainly lists 2008 figures; “Surprisingly” does not establish why the increase in relaxing at home is unexpected. The ranking language (“Third place,” “least place,” “last thing”) also makes the comparisons harder to follow. Group the main increases and decreases clearly, and use linking phrases that express the actual relationship between the data.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-related vocabulary, such as “proportion,” “steadily,” and “falling,” and the reader can generally identify the activities being discussed. However, the range is limited and several choices or forms are inaccurate or unnatural, sometimes obscuring meaning. “Working people were 33%” confuses people with the proportion of time, while “linear” is not an appropriate description of the sports and travel figures. There are also spelling errors, including “demonstartes” and “actvities,” and informal wording such as “the last thing any one would do.” Aim for precise chart language, such as “accounted for,” “rose,” and “declined,” and check spelling and collocations carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of simple statements and longer sentences, and some basic comparisons are understandable. However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make parts of the response difficult to interpret. For example, “The chart demonstartes grown ups … spent their time between 1958 to 2008” has problems with sentence construction and prepositions, while “working activity kept increasing” does not clearly express the comparison between the two years. “Sleeping majority was slightly falling down” also has an unclear grammatical structure. Practise forming accurate comparison sentences with a clear subject and verb, such as “The proportion of time spent sleeping fell from 32% to 25%.”
