Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the main pattern that working takes the largest share in both years, and you correctly report several key figures, including working at 33% and 42%, sleeping at 32% and 25%, and relaxing at home at 13% in 2008. However, the account is only partial: the 1958 figures for travel and relaxing are not given, and the 2008 comparison omits the exact values for travelling and going out. The statement that sports was among the least popular activities in 1958 is inaccurate, as sports appears only in the 2008 data. The overview also misses the notable rise in working and travel and the fall in socialising. The response is 20 words below the required minimum; develop the comparisons with accurate figures and a fuller overview.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for 1958 and 2008. This gives the reader a basic route through the information, and phrases such as “Overall” and “Turning to 2008” help signal shifts. However, progression within the year-by-year paragraphs is uneven, and the final sentence is difficult to follow because it combines several activities without stating their percentages or completing the comparison clearly. “Whereas” also introduces a fragment rather than a complete contrasting clause. Use a consistent pattern for each year—largest categories, smaller categories, then a direct comparison—and connect contrasts in complete sentences to make the organisation clearer and less abrupt.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “highest share,” and “accounting,” and you attempt alternatives to repeating “time.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “time consumed,” “working grown ups,” and “working is responsible for the largest share.” Spelling errors in “varity” and “traveling” also reduce precision, while “19's” is not an appropriate way to refer to 1958. The limited range of accurate chart language makes some descriptions less clear. Prefer standard expressions such as “the proportion of the day spent on,” “working adults,” and “accounted for,” and use precise activity labels from the chart consistently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and more complex comparisons, for example, “whereas travelling to work account for lowest in 1958.” However, complex structures are often incomplete or inaccurate, and errors sometimes make relationships between figures unclear. In that example, the verb does not agree with the singular subject, and the sentence needs an article before “lowest.” The final sentence beginning “While sport…” is a fragment, and “twice as much as sleeping at 25%” does not form a clear grammatical comparison. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after full stops and commas. Build complete sentences around each comparison, check subject–verb agreement and articles, and punctuate clauses carefully.
