The both pie chart illustrates the proportion of working adults in a specific country with average usage of their time in 1958 and 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify several relevant figures, including working and sleeping in 1958 and the fall in sleeping from 32% to 25%. However, the response only partially summarises the charts: it does not clearly compare the full range of activities across both years, and the overview is unclear. The claim that the proportions in both working and sleeping “moderately increased” is inaccurate, since sleeping decreased, while working rose from 33% to 42%. The 2008 discussion also omits relaxing at home and travelling to work, and does not report the 13% and 7% figures. Playing sports is mentioned, but its absence from the 1958 chart is not explained. Select the main changes accurately and give a concise overview of the largest rises and falls.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic structure, with an opening, an overview and separate paragraphs for the two years. This gives the reader some sense of organisation, and words such as “Overall” and “In 2008” signal transitions. However, progression is uneven: the overview makes a confusing claim about both working and sleeping increasing, and the final paragraph combines sleeping, working, sports and socialising without a clear comparison. Some links are mechanical or unclear, as in “in contrast” and “similarly,” which do not accurately show the relationships between the figures. Grouping the main increases together and the decreases together, then using clear comparisons between years, would make the information easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “proportion,” “category,” “accounted for” and “downward trend,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or too informal for an academic summary. “Homies” and “hangout” are unsuitable for this task, while “fewest contribution” and “adults are improved their proportion” do not express the intended meanings clearly. Repetition of “adults,” “category” and “proportion” also limits flexibility. Aim for precise terms such as “share,” “percentage,” “rose,” “fell” and “spent time socialising,” and check that each phrase describes the data rather than the people themselves.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a few longer structures, including the overview and the sentence comparing sleeping in the two years, but control is inconsistent and errors occur frequently. Examples include “The both pie chart illustrates,” “majority of the adults are accounted in,” and “sleeping category are shown downward trend,” where articles, agreement and sentence structure are faulty. Tense and verb patterns are also problematic in “adults spend their day” and “adults are improved their proportion.” Punctuation and capitalisation are inconsistent, particularly after full stops and around “in contrast.” These errors sometimes make the intended comparison difficult to understand. Practise accurate simple comparison sentences first, then combine them using controlled clauses such as “while” and “whereas.”
