Student answer (Band 6.5)
The two pie charts compares the porpotion of the day spent by working adults on six different activities in a particular country between 1958 and 2008.
Overall, it can be seen that working and sleeping represented the largest shares of spending in both two years. While, travelling to eork recorded the lowest share.
In terms of spending time on working, adults spend 33% of their time on working in 1958, the percentage increased to 42% by 2008. Although, sleeping was the second most popular activity, it declined from 32% to 25% in second year.An upward trend can be noticed in both traveling to work and relaxing at home, from 2% to 7% and 8% to 13% respectively.
A considerable decline can be observed on the porpotion of time that adult employees spent on hanging out with their friends and families. It accounted for 19% in 1958, then fell to only 6% in 2008.
The time spent on playing sports remained constant of 7% in both years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response selects the main comparisons and reports the figures accurately: working rises from 33% to 42%, sleeping falls from 32% to 25%, and time spent with friends and family drops from 19% to 6%. The overview also identifies work and sleep as the largest categories in both years. However, it incorrectly says travelling to work was the lowest share in both years; in 2008, travelling and playing sports are each 7%, while going out is lower at 6%. The final sentence also says sports remained at 7% in both years, although the chart shows sports only in 2008. These inaccuracies weaken an otherwise clear summary of the key trends.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs comparing the main changes. The progression from work and sleep to travel, relaxation, and socialising is easy to follow, and phrases such as “In terms of” and “A considerable decline” help signal shifts. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent arrangement, while the half-band reflects some effective organisation. However, cohesion is not consistently controlled: “Although” is used awkwardly to introduce the sleeping comparison, and “While” begins a fragment in the overview. The sports sentence is also detached from the preceding comparisons. Grouping the categories more deliberately and using linking phrases accurately would make the progression smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
There is adequate vocabulary for describing chart data, including “represented the largest shares,” “declined,” “upward trend,” and “considerable decline.” The writer also varies the wording for socialising with “hanging out with their friends and families.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or informal for an academic summary. “Proportion” is misspelled twice, “spending time on working” is unnatural, and “hanging out” is less suitable than a neutral expression such as “socialising.” The phrase “lowest share” is also used imprecisely for 2008. Greater care with spelling and more consistent formal phrasing would improve precision while retaining the useful range already shown.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and more complex forms, including comparisons with “from … to …” and a passive construction in “A considerable decline can be observed.” Most meanings remain clear, but some grammatical errors recur. The opening has subject–verb disagreement (“charts compares”), and “adults spend” should be in the past tense to match the years described. There are also problems with sentence boundaries and punctuation: “While, travelling to work recorded…” is not a complete, well-formed sentence, and missing spaces after full stops make several sentences run together. The construction “remained constant of 7%” is also inaccurate. Checking agreement, tense, and sentence punctuation would make the varied structures more controlled.
