Student answer (Band 6.0)

The provided pie charts demonstrate how employed grown-ups spent their time in 1958 and 2008 in a specific country across six activities.

Overall, spending time on working remained the highest percentage over the given period and its proportion rose noticeably. Travelling to work accounted for the lowest percentage in the two given years.

Spending time on working started with 33% in 19585, before rising sharply to 42% by 2008. Adults admired spending time on relaxing at home as it increased by the later year, as it grew from only 8% in 1958 to 13% in 2008. Travelling to work experinced the lowest proportion in 1958, as it reached 2%. After that, it rose to 7% in 2008. Spending time on playing sports increased negligibly. It reached 6% in 1958, before reaching 7% in 2008.

Sleeping experienced a decreasing trend as it decreased by 8%. Also going out with friends or family declined sharply, it started with 19% in 1958 and reached only 6% in 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main overall pattern: working took the largest share in both years and increased, while sleeping and socialising declined. Several figures are reported accurately, including work (33% to 42%), travel (2% to 7%), and relaxing at home (8% to 13%). However, there are important inaccuracies: sports is not shown in 1958, so the claim that it rose from 6% to 7% is unsupported; the 7% in 2008 is its only chart value. Sleeping fell from 32% to 25%, a decrease of seven percentage points, not 8%. Also, travel was not the lowest category in 2008, since both travel and sports were 7%, below relaxing at home. These errors and the limited comparison of some categories leave parts of the summary less fully addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing changes. The overview helps the reader identify the main trends, and phrases such as “before rising” and “After that” signal sequence. However, the progression is weakened by grouping details unevenly: sports is discussed as if it had a 1958 figure, while sleeping and socialising are left to a very short final paragraph. Some linking is mechanical or unclear, particularly “Also going out with friends or family declined sharply, it started…”, where two clauses are joined only by a comma. Repeated openings such as “Spending time on…” also make the account less fluid. Grouping increases together and decreases together, with clearer links between comparisons, would improve cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “accounted for,” “declined sharply,” and “decreasing trend.” These choices generally make the comparisons understandable. However, some wording is inaccurate or unnatural for describing chart data. “Adults admired spending time on relaxing at home” does not express the intended idea, and “increased negligibly” is not suitable for the sports figure, which is not available for 1958. There are also spelling errors in “experinced” and “19585,” and repeated use of “spending time on” limits variety. Aim for precise reporting verbs and collocations such as “the share of time spent on…” or “the proportion allocated to…”.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses with “before” and “as,” and most of the meaning remains clear. Some grammatical and punctuation errors are present, but they rarely prevent understanding. For example, “Also going out with friends or family declined sharply, it started…” joins two independent clauses with a comma; use a full stop or a conjunction. In “it decreased by 8%,” the pronoun’s reference is not fully clear, and the sentence would be more precise with the category named directly. The phrase “in the two given years” is also awkwardly formed. Continue varying sentence structures, while checking clause boundaries and making references explicit.
