Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify several important changes accurately: working rises from 33% to 42%, socialising falls from 19% to 6%, and sleeping declines from 32% to 25%. However, the overview is not sufficiently clear or consistently grounded in the charts. The claim that working is the largest category in both years is inaccurate for 1958, when sleeping is slightly lower at 32% compared with working at 33%—so working is largest, but only narrowly; this should be stated precisely. More importantly, “playing games” is not shown as unchanged: sports appears only in 2008, at 7%. The conclusion about younger generations being more focused and health being more important in 1958 is unsupported by the data. Focus on summarising the chart rather than inferring motives or age groups, and include the new sports category in a clear overview.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has some organisation: it begins with an introduction, groups several comparisons in the middle, and ends with a conclusion. Basic linking expressions such as “However,” “Moreover,” and “In conclusion” help signal relationships. Nevertheless, progression is uneven, and the conclusion introduces claims about focus, challenge, and health that do not follow from the chart. Some comparisons are crowded together, while the paragraph breaks do not consistently separate the main trends. References such as “it” in “it is consistent at all” are unclear, and “on the other side” does not connect the contrast naturally. Organise the body around the largest changes and remaining categories, and use precise links such as “by contrast” or “while” to make comparisons easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “proportion,” “percentage,” “rise,” and “decreases,” and the activity labels generally make the topic understandable. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, which sometimes makes the meaning difficult to interpret. “Time management” suggests how efficiently people organise their time, rather than how they spend it; “portions of chart” is also an awkward description. “Playing games” does not match the chart’s category of playing sports, and “more reliable” does not clearly describe a time-use pattern. Aim for precise terms such as “share of the day,” “accounted for,” and “increased/decreased,” and use the chart’s activity labels accurately. Avoid evaluative wording that the figures cannot support.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts some longer structures, including comparisons with “as compared to” and a contrast introduced by “Although,” but control is inconsistent. Errors occur in sentence structure, agreement, verb forms, and punctuation, and they sometimes make relationships hard to follow. For example, “going out with relatives and friends are high” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “seems a increases” is not a well-formed verb phrase. The sentence beginning “Although they are more into working” is incomplete, and “in 1958 is(33%)not really high than” is difficult to parse. Commas and spaces are also missing around several figures and sentence boundaries. Practise accurate simple comparison sentences first, then combine them using correctly formed clauses.
