Student answer (Band 7.0)

The given pie charts compare the proportion of various activities performed by adult employees in a specific country in 1958 and 2008.

Overall, woking is the most popular activity in both the years. While travelling to work is the least favourable in the initial year, going out with family/friends was the least favourable activity by the final year.

In 1958, significantly large proportion of time was invested in working comprising 33% and 42% in 1958 and 2008, respectively. However, only 2% of time was dedicated to travelling to work in 1958 which occupied the least share. For 2008, the least preferred activity was going out with family/friends dedicating 6% of day time, which decresed from 19%. Moreover, travelling to work and playing sports both occupied 7% shares in 2008, which changed from 2% and 6%, respectively.

Sleeping was the second most preferred activity in both years, that comprised of 32% time in 1958 and 25% time in 2008. Furthermore, percentage of relaxing activities increased from 8% to 13% from 1958 to 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You identify the main overall changes clearly: working remains the largest category, while the least common activity shifts from commuting to socialising. The key figures you report are accurate, including the rise in working from 33% to 42%, the fall in sleeping from 32% to 25%, and the increase in travel from 2% to 7%. You also include the 2008 sports figure and the decline in going out. This gives the response a clear overview and relevant comparisons. To develop the report further, make the comparison of socialising and sports more explicit: sports is absent from the 1958 data, so avoid implying a change from 6%; that 6% belongs to going out in 2008. A more precise account of this category would strengthen the coverage.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised effectively into an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs. The overview gives the reader a useful guide to the main features, and the later paragraphs generally move from the largest categories to smaller ones. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “However,” and “Furthermore” help signal relationships between points. The progression is clear, although some connections could be more precise. In particular, “which changed from 2% and 6%, respectively” is difficult to follow because the 6% figure refers to going out, not sports. Grouping the two years’ figures consistently for each activity, and using clearer references such as “this figure” or repeating the activity name, would make the comparisons easier to track.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing charts, including “proportion,” “occupied,” “dedicated,” and “comprised,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “least favourable” and “significantly large proportion,” but these are not natural collocations for activities or chart shares. “Most popular” also suggests preference, whereas the chart measures time spent. Spelling slips in “woking” and “decresed” detract from accuracy, and “day time” is less natural than “daily time” or simply “time.” To move beyond adequate range, prioritise precise, natural chart language and check spelling carefully; this will make the vocabulary more flexible and accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including a contrast clause beginning “While…” and a relative clause in “which occupied the least share.” Most sentences communicate the intended comparisons, and the paragraphing supports readability. Some grammatical patterns are not fully controlled, however. In “significantly large proportion of time was invested,” the article is missing; “which comprised of 32% time” uses an incorrect construction; and “the least preferred activity was … dedicating 6%” has an awkward participle structure. The sentence about travel and sports also leaves the reference of “respectively” unclear. Practise accurate article use and concise comparison structures, for example, “Sleeping accounted for 32% in 1958 and 25% in 2008.”
