Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify several key figures accurately, including working as the largest category in both years (33% and 42%) and travelling to work as the smallest in 1958 (2%). However, the report mainly ranks categories and gives little account of the overall changes: for example, working and travel increased, while sleeping and socialising declined, and sports appears only in 2008. The final sentence, “very informative,” does not provide a meaningful overview of the data. The response is also two words below the 150-word minimum; the ten words copied from the prompt are excluded. To improve, give a clear overview of the main shifts and compare the most significant figures rather than focusing on colours or rankings alone.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic, readable structure: an introduction is followed by one paragraph for each year and a concluding sentence. This helps the reader locate the information. However, progression is limited because the paragraphs list the highest and lowest categories rather than developing comparisons between the two charts. Connectors such as “Moreover,” “But,” and “As well as” are repetitive or awkward, and the final sentence does not effectively summarise the preceding details. Organise the body around the main changes across the years, using clear links such as “By contrast” or “Meanwhile,” and make the overview a distinct, informative summary.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant basic terms such as “highest value,” “lowest value,” and the activity labels, so the topic is generally clear. However, vocabulary is repetitive and some expressions are unnatural for describing chart data, including “the highest value in working” and “the pie charts was very informative.” Mentioning colours (“purple,” “green,” and “sky blue”) adds little analytical value. Use more precise reporting language and vary the verbs and comparison phrases. For example, describe a category as “accounted for” a percentage, or say that a figure “rose” or “fell.” This would make the report more concise and appropriate to an academic summary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response communicates its basic meaning through mostly simple sentence patterns, but the range is limited and errors recur. In “the highest value in working which is 33%,” the clause is incomplete and the present-tense “is” is unsuitable for reporting the 1958 data. “The pie charts was very informative” has subject–verb disagreement, while “in1958” lacks a space. Several sentences are joined in awkward ways, such as “As well as, the second highest value…,” which is not a complete, well-formed transition. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and complete comparison sentences, for example, “Working accounted for 33% in 1958, rising to 42% in 2008.”
