Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie charts illustrate the percentages of the day spent by working adults on various activities in 1958 and 2008.
Overall, it is clear from all the perspectives that adults are spending more time working than they used to in 1958. The amount of time spent going out with family/friends has decreased dramatically over the period.
Working accounted for 33 percent of time spent in 1958 which rose to 42 percent in 2008. Adults used to spend a third of their day sleeping in 1958 which came down to 25 percent or 6 hours a day in 2008. The time spent relaxing indoors was 8 percent in 1958 which icreased by more than 50 percent over the five decades to reach 13 percent.
Adults used to spend 19 percent of their time going out with friends or family which dipped to just 6 percent in 2008. This indicates that more and more people are choosing to stay indoors. Time spent on commuting to work takes up about 7 percent of a day in 2008 whereas it accounted for 2 percent in 1958.
Time spent on sports activities remain unchanged over the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main shifts accurately: working rises from 33% to 42%, while sleeping falls from 32% to 25% and socialising drops from 19% to 6%. The overview also highlights the two most notable changes. However, some reporting is incomplete or unclear. The statement that sports time “remain unchanged” is unsupported: sports appears only in 2008, at 7%, so it cannot be compared across both years. The claim that the social decline indicates people are choosing to stay indoors is an interpretation rather than a feature shown by the charts. To make the response more complete, report the new sports category accurately and keep conclusions tied to the displayed data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs presenting the figures. The comparisons are generally easy to follow, and phrases such as “over the period” help connect the years. However, the final sentence about sports is detached from the preceding comparison and does not explain that this category is shown only in 2008. Some links between figures and conclusions are also too abrupt, particularly “This indicates that more and more people are choosing to stay indoors.” Organise the details into clearer comparison groups and use references that make the relationship between each activity and year explicit. This would make progression smoother and cohesion less dependent on repeated sentence patterns.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task vocabulary, including “accounted for,” “dipped,” “commuting,” and “dramatically,” and the meaning is generally clear. There is some variation in how you describe changes, although several expressions are imprecise or informal for chart reporting. “From all the perspectives” is an awkward way to introduce the overview, while “stay indoors” adds an interpretation not established by the data. “Relaxing indoors” also changes the chart’s label, which is simply relaxing at home. The spelling error “icreased” and the phrase “sports activities” could be improved. Aim for precise, neutral wording and use the chart categories consistently.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, and most of the comparisons are understandable. For example, “The amount of time spent going out with family/friends has decreased dramatically over the period” is a clear, well-formed sentence. Some errors remain in verb forms and agreement: “Time spent on sports activities remain unchanged” should use “remains,” and the past-time description “Adults used to spend…” is less suitable than a direct past-tense comparison. Several long sentences join two clauses with “which,” making the relationships slightly awkward. The response therefore shows some control of complex structures, but greater accuracy in agreement and clearer clause construction would strengthen it.
