Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie charts compare the percentages of the day spent by adult workers on six different activites during 1958 and 2008.
Overall, it is noticeable that the vast majority of the workers spent working during the given period. Travelling to work was the lowest category in percentages of the day spent in 1958, while going out with friends and family was the least favored share in 2018.
With regard to the first pie chart, in 1958, working and sleeping were the highest proportions, with 33% and 32% respectively. This was followed by going out with friends or family, which was around 19% and relaxing at home ranked fourth, with 8% of the total day spent by workers on various activities. Moreover, playing sport comprised around 5% and travelling to work accounted for 2%, which was the least proportion of the total day spent in 1958.
In 2008, working consituted for 42% and it was almost half of the pie chart. In addition, sleeping was an one-fourth of the total day spent, which made up 25%. Relaxing at home accounted for 13%, while playing sports and travelling to work comprised the same percentage, with 7%. Finally, going out with friends or family was only 6% and it was the lowest percentage of the day spent by working adults in 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main categories and report many key figures accurately, including work and sleep in 1958 and the leading and smallest shares in 2008. However, the overview is not fully reliable: it says going out was least favoured in “2018” rather than 2008, and describes working as the “vast majority” even though it accounts for 33% and 42%, not a majority. More importantly, you add that sport took around 5% in 1958, although the chart shows no sports category for that year; the six-category description also overlooks that the number of activities differs between the charts. These inaccuracies and the limited synthesis of the overall changes keep the report from covering the data consistently. Highlight the rise in work and travel and the fall in socialising and sleep.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by separate paragraphs for 1958 and 2008. This makes the two years easy to follow, and sequencing phrases such as “This was followed by” and “Finally” help guide the reader through the figures. The organisation is generally coherent, though the overview could do more to connect the most important changes across the charts rather than simply naming the extremes. Some linking is also formulaic, with “In addition” and “Moreover” introducing lists rather than showing meaningful relationships. A more comparative structure—for example, grouping increases together and decreases together—would create stronger progression and make the comparisons more prominent.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportions,” “accounted for,” “comprised,” and “constituted,” and the meaning is generally clear. There is some variation in how you describe the figures, which supports the report. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “the vast majority” overstates the share of time spent working, “least favored share” is awkward for a chart description, and “working constituted for 42%” uses an unsuitable collocation. There are also spelling errors in “activites” and “consituted.” Aim for precise, conventional chart language and check spelling; for example, say that work “accounted for” 42% and that socialising “had the smallest share.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses with “which” and contrastive structures such as “while playing sports and travelling to work comprised the same percentage.” Most sentences remain understandable, and punctuation and paragraphing are generally controlled. Some grammatical errors persist, however. In “working constituted for 42%,” the verb pattern is incorrect; “constituted 42%” or “accounted for 42%” is needed. “Sleeping was an one-fourth” has an article error, and “the vast majority of the workers spent working” is not a well-formed construction. These do not usually prevent understanding, but more accurate verb patterns, articles, and sentence phrasing would improve control. Proofread each sentence for a complete, natural grammatical structure.
