Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart compares the proportions of daily time spenting by working adults in a specific country in two years in 1958 and 2008.

Overalla, working accounted for the largest proportion of the day in both years, while trevelling to work and going out with friends represented the smallest share. It is also noticable that playing sports remained same in both years.

In 1958, working constituted 33% of the total, making it the largest segment. This was followed by sleeping at 32% and going out with friends at 19%. Moreover, relaxing at home accounted for only 8%, while playing spotrs at 7%. In contrast, trevelling to work accounted for only 2%, making it the smallest category.

In 2008, working increased to 42% with largest category tag. Meanwhile, sleeping decreased to 25% and relaxing at home to 13%. The proportion of playing sports remained unchanged at 7% whereas going out with friends declined to 6%. At last the smallest segment of 1958, travelling to work rise to 7%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main pattern that work took the largest share in both years and report several relevant figures accurately, including work, sleep, and travel. The comparison between 1958 and 2008 is also clear for most categories. However, the overview contains a factual error: sports cannot have “remained same in both years,” because it appears only in the 2008 chart. In 1958, the smallest category was travel, but in 2008 travel and sports were both 7%, so travel was not uniquely the smallest. Some details are also less fully handled: the overview could summarise the major shifts, especially the fall in socialising and rise in work, rather than making an unsupported claim about sports.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised effectively into an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the two years. This gives the reader a clear route through the information, and sequencing expressions such as “In 1958,” “In contrast,” and “In 2008” help distinguish the periods. Most comparisons are easy to follow. Some linking is less natural or precise, however: “At last” does not appropriately introduce the final data point, and “with largest category tag” interrupts the flow rather than clearly explaining the comparison. The overview also groups travel and going out as the smallest shares without clarifying that the ranking changes in 2008. More precise transitions and clearer references between years would make the progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportions,” “constituted,” “accounted for,” “segment,” and “declined.” These choices help describe chart data, and the intended meaning is generally understandable. However, several spelling errors and inaccurate or awkward expressions reduce precision: “spenting,” “Overalla,” “trevelling,” and “spotrs” should be corrected, while “with largest category tag” and “remained same” are not natural collocations. “Largest proportion” or “largest category” would be clearer than “largest category tag.” Aim to use a smaller set of accurate reporting phrases consistently, and check spelling carefully, especially for key activity labels that recur in the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including comparisons with “while” and “whereas,” and most sentences communicate the intended information. Some grammatical errors remain. For example, “playing sports remained same” needs an article or determiner (“remained the same”), and “with largest category tag” lacks a clear grammatical construction. In “the smallest segment of 1958, travelling to work rise to 7%,” the verb form should be “rose,” and the sentence needs a clearer comparison with 2008. The opening sentence also has an awkward structure around “in two years in 1958 and 2008.” Review articles, verb tense consistency, and sentence construction when comparing figures; these corrections would improve accuracy without requiring more complex structures.
