Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the broad subject and make an attempt to compare the two years, including work, sleep, travel and socialising. However, the account is only minimally accurate: the overview says work is highest and travel is among the lowest, but it does not clearly summarise the major changes. Several figures or years are wrong: sleeping in 1958 was 32%, not 33%; the second chart is for 2008, not 2001; and in 2008 relaxing at home was 13%, not 23%. The statement that sports and travel were unchanged at 7% is also misleading, since sports is shown only in 2008 and travel rose from 2% to 7%. Select the main trends and check each figure against the chart.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic paragraph structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate descriptions of the two years. This gives the reader some sense of organisation, and phrases such as “Overall” and “On other hand” attempt to signal progression. However, the progression is not consistently clear because comparisons and details are mixed together, and some sentences are difficult to follow, particularly the overview and the final paragraph. Linking words such as “While” and “However” are sometimes used without a clear contrast, while the list of activities in the opening is crowded. Group the information by the most important changes, and use straightforward links to show whether a figure rose, fell or remained stable.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “percentage,” “accounted,” “rose,” and “decreases,” and you attempt to describe proportions and changes. However, the range is limited and many word-choice, spelling and word-form errors make parts of the report hard to understand. Examples include “pi charts,” “deovte,” “hightest account figure,” and “most higest proporation.” Some expressions are also unnatural, such as “working show the most increased” and “travelling to working fell.” Use standard chart phrases such as “the proportion of the day spent working,” “accounted for the largest share,” and “increased from … to …”. Accurate spelling and natural collocations are especially important for making the data clear.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
There are attempts at longer sentences and contrast clauses, for example, “While the … charts demonstrates…” and “On other hand…”. However, grammatical control is weak: errors in agreement, verb forms, articles and sentence construction occur frequently and sometimes obscure the intended meaning. For instance, “The two pi charts illustrates” has a plural subject with a singular verb, while “working show the most increased to 33%” does not form a clear grammatical description. Several clauses are joined or punctuated poorly, as in the sentence beginning “By 1958,” which runs through multiple comparisons without clear boundaries. Practise writing short, accurate comparison sentences first, then combine them using correctly formed clauses and punctuation.
