Student answer (Band 6.5)
The illustration below gives us the information about the working adults in a specific country using their time in 1958 and 2008.
Overall, in 1958 professionals spent most of their time working, and spent the least amount of time on traveling to work. On the other hand, in 2008 the ratio increased and 42% of their day was consumed by work and travelling took 7% of their time.
In 1958, the largest segment represents adults spending their time at work by 33% and 8% relaxing at home. 32% of it was used to get some sleep where a negligible portion of 2% was consumed by traveling to work, compared to going out with friends and family which accounted for only 19% of the day.
However, in 2008 the portions fluctuated and people worked for almost 42% of their day and took more time to relax spending 13% of their time relaxing while the amount of time they spent on sleeping decreased by 7%. Travelling took more time than before increasing by 5% whereas the amount of time spent on going out with family decreased dramatically and reached 6% only. Lastly playing sports accounted for 7% of the entire day.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main pattern that work took the largest share in both years and that travel increased, and you include most of the key figures. The comparison of sleeping time is also accurate: it fell from 32% to 25%, a decrease of seven percentage points. However, the overview says that in 1958 adults spent the least time travelling, which overlooks that sports is absent from that year’s chart rather than a comparable category. The phrase “in 2008 the ratio increased” is unclear about what increased, and the overview could better capture the major shift from socialising (19% to 6%) toward work (33% to 42%). These details are relevant, but some comparisons are less fully developed or precisely expressed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs describing each year. The sequence within the body is generally easy to follow, and transitions such as “On the other hand,” “However,” and “Lastly” help signal comparisons and additional information. This gives the report a coherent arrangement. At times, however, the linking feels mechanical, and some references are not fully clear. For example, “the ratio increased” does not specify which activity or measure is meant, while “32% of it” has an uncertain reference. The final paragraph also moves through several figures in a list-like way. Grouping the most important increases and decreases into clearer comparisons would make progression more flexible and cohesive.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing chart data, including “largest segment,” “accounted for,” “decreased dramatically,” and “increasing by 5%.” These choices help communicate the main trends, and the meaning is generally clear. There are also some imprecise or unnatural collocations: “the ratio increased” is vague, “consumed by work” is an awkward way to describe a share of the day, and “used to get some sleep” is informal for an academic report. “Fluctuated” is not quite suitable because the charts compare two points in time rather than showing variation over a period. Aim for precise reporting verbs and standard chart language, such as “the proportion rose” or “accounted for,” while avoiding overly conversational phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You show a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a clear contrast structure in “whereas the amount of time spent on going out… decreased.” Most sentences communicate the data successfully, and the use of past-tense reporting is generally appropriate. Some grammatical issues remain. In “the largest segment represents adults spending their time at work by 33%,” the present tense is inconsistent with the past-year description, and the construction around “by 33%” is awkward. “32% of it was used” also has an unclear pronoun reference, while “people worked for almost 42% of their day” would be more naturally structured as a proportion of the day. Check tense consistency, sentence patterns for percentages, and punctuation around longer clauses to improve accuracy.
