Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response makes a limited attempt to compare the two years, mentioning that people worked more and slept less “now a day,” and that they spent less time with friends and family. However, it does not report the chart’s key figures or give a clear, factual overview of the main changes. Some claims are unsupported or inaccurate: for example, the charts do not show that people travelled by “his own legs” in 1958 or by bike and car in 2008, nor do they indicate effects on health or energy. The response also omits the 2008 sports category. It is 16 words below the required minimum. To improve, summarise the largest changes accurately and avoid explanations not shown by the data.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is a basic attempt to organise the response around 1958 and the present day, so the reader can identify the two periods being compared. However, ideas are not arranged into clear paragraphs or a logical overview followed by supporting details. The repeated references to working hard, pressure, and health make the progression difficult to follow, while links such as “that way” do not clearly connect the chart information. Several ideas are joined into long strings without effective punctuation. Use separate paragraphs for an overview and comparisons, and connect each point explicitly—for example, contrast the rise in working time with the fall in sleeping and socialising.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary is basic and repetitive, with frequent reliance on “work hard,” “very,” and “going out.” Some wording communicates the general topic, such as “friends and family” and “relaxing at home,” but several choices are inaccurate or unclear for describing a chart. “Relex” is misspelled, and “sleeping very well” describes sleep quality rather than the proportion of time spent sleeping. Phrases such as “pressure on their heads” and “his own legs” are not appropriate descriptions of the visual data. Build a small set of precise chart terms, including “accounted for,” “share,” “increased,” and “declined,” and use activity labels consistently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts to express comparisons and reasons, but sentence structures are very limited and errors occur frequently, sometimes making the intended meaning unclear. Examples include “most of the people's work hard,” “They are travel to work,” and “They can't enjoying,” where verb forms and sentence construction are faulty. Agreement and pronoun use are also inconsistent, as in “people's” and “his own legs,” and the shift from “In 1958” to “In now a day” is not grammatically controlled. Punctuation is weak: several ideas run together, and spacing around full stops is inconsistent. Practise accurate simple comparison sentences first, then add clauses such as “while” or “whereas.”
