Student answer (Band 5.0)
The pie charts illustrates how working adults in a particular country spent their time both in 1958 and 2008.
While some increase and decrease happened. the most changed happened in sleeping and working. Others are a little change than these two.
While in 1958 the adult spend their day mostly by working and sleeping the difference is 1% but in 2008 they spent their time by working 42% and sleeping 25% which has more than 17% of decrease than previous year. The most obvious difference is how much they reduced sleeping from 1958 to 2008 and increase their working from 33% to 42%. thats almost 10% increase. Beside sleeping only travel with friends and family also decreased which around 19% to 6% which is less than half . While relaxing at home went from 8% to 13% of increase. Playing sports , Travelling to work also increased accordingly to 13% from 8% and 7%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main contrast—working takes a larger share in 2008, while sleeping and socialising take less—and include several relevant figures. However, some data are misreported: the 19% to 6% fall is for going out with friends and family, not “travel with friends and family”; sports is shown only in 2008 at 7%, and the figures 13% and 8% do not describe sports and commuting. The overview is also vague (“some increase and decrease happened”), and the chart’s main features are not fully and accurately summarised. The response is 144 words, below the required 150, with 10 prompt words excluded from the count. Add a concise overview and check each figure against its category.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a basic attempt to organise the response, beginning with an introduction and then comparing the two years. Linking expressions such as “While” and “Beside” show an effort to connect information. However, the second paragraph is a fragment, and the final paragraph combines several comparisons in a long, difficult-to-follow sequence. The repeated use of “while” does not always show a clear relationship between ideas, and the figures for different activities become confused. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and key comparisons, then group related increases and decreases. Clearer sentence boundaries and more precise referencing would help the reader follow the progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “working,” “sleeping,” “relaxing at home,” and “decreased,” so the subject is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several choices or combinations are inaccurate, such as “the most changed happened,” “travel with friends and family,” and “went from 8% to 13% of increase.” These expressions make some comparisons unclear. There are also spelling and form issues, including “thats” and “Beside” where a different linking phrase is needed. Aim for precise chart language and natural collocations, such as “the largest change,” “the proportion spent travelling to work,” and “rose from 8% to 13%.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and more complex sentences, but control is inconsistent and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to interpret. For example, “The pie charts illustrates” has subject–verb disagreement, while “While some increase and decrease happened” is an incomplete sentence. In “the adult spend their day,” the verb form and number are incorrect, and the sentence beginning “While in 1958” is awkwardly structured. Punctuation and capitalisation are also unreliable, as in “. the most changed” and “thats.” Practise complete sentence structures, accurate past-tense reporting, and agreement between subjects and verbs; then proofread sentence boundaries.
