Student answer (Band 6.5)

The pie-charts compares how employed adults in a particular country spent their time in 1959 and 2008.

Overall, the working hours has increased dramatically, while the sleeping hours decreased. There has also been changes in the percentages of time spent going out with family, travelling to work, relaxing and playing over the few decades.

In 1958,the majority of time of an employed adult was spent working, accounting for 33%. Sleeping takes the second-highest proportion at 32%, while going out with family and friends accounted for 19%. Furthermore, working adults spent 8% of their time resting at home, 6% playing sports and the smallest proportion of time was spent for travelling to work, representing only 2% of total time.

Now in 2008, the proportion of time exhausted in working rose up to 42% while time spent sleeping decined substantially to 25%. Additionally time spent going out with family and friends decreased to 6% from 19%. More time was spent relaxing at home, accounting for 13% compared to before. Likewise time spent for travelling to work increased to 7%. Working adults also had a slight increase of 1% in time allocated for playing sports.

In conclusion, working adults spent most of their time working in both years, while time for sleeping, going out declined even though time spent for the other activities increased noticeably.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You identify the main overall shifts accurately: working rose from 33% to 42%, while sleeping and socialising fell, and you include relevant figures for the other activities. The response also gives a clear overview and compares both years. However, there are factual inconsistencies that prevent the account from being fully precise: the chart is for 1958, not 1959, and playing sports is not shown as 6% in 1958; it appears only in the 2008 chart, at 7%. The final claim that time for “the other activities increased” is also too broad, since going out declined substantially. Check each category against the chart and make the overview’s comparisons exact.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, separate descriptions of the two years, and a concluding summary. The progression from the earlier figures to the later ones is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “while,” “Additionally,” and “Likewise” help connect comparisons. Some cohesion is less controlled, however. The overview lists several activities without clearly grouping the main increases and decreases, and the final “In conclusion” repeats the overview rather than adding a useful comparison. Transitions such as “Now in 2008” are also somewhat conversational. Organise the body around the largest changes or use parallel comparisons across years to make the progression more purposeful.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing proportions and change, including “accounting for,” “proportion,” “decreased,” and “allocated.” Meaning is generally clear, but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for chart reporting. “The proportion of time exhausted in working” does not express time spent working, and “rose up to” is less precise than a direct reporting verb. “Playing over the few decades” is vague, while “resting at home” does not match the chart’s category of relaxing at home. There are also spelling errors, including “decined.” Aim for consistent, natural collocations and use the chart’s activity labels accurately; this will make the adequate range more precise and reliable.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including comparisons with “while” and clauses introduced by “accounting for.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “The pie-charts compares” has subject–verb disagreement, and “the working hours has increased” should use a plural verb or a singular subject. “There has also been changes” has an agreement error, and “Sleeping takes” shifts awkwardly into the present tense when describing past data. Punctuation spacing is inconsistent, as in “decreased. There” and “1958,the.” Use past-tense forms consistently for both years, check agreement, and proofread sentence boundaries and spacing.
