Student answer (Band 5.0)

The pie chart illustrates how the young people spent the time in 2008 and 1958 in a certain country

during 1958 adults used to spend most of the time of thier day in working about 33 perct similarly 32 perct in sleeping little less comapred to sleeping on the other hand younger people spend mostvof the time of tge day on working about 42 perct and only 25 perct in sleeping which in much less compared to 1958

going out with acqitances showed the largest decline it was about 16 perct in 1958 and now only 16 perct . the time spent on relaxing in home increased to 4 perct now same goes with time spent on travelling to work it increased to 5 perct whwereas there is only a slightesst increase in time playing sports

thus the amount of time spent on working increased alot over the time while the time adults spent on sleeping decreased over time whereas time spent on relaxing incread over time

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the main broad changes: working takes a larger share in 2008, while sleeping and socialising take less. However, several figures are inaccurate or unclear, which limits how fully the charts are reported. For example, going out with friends and family falls from 19% to 6%, not from 16% to 16%; relaxing at home rises from 8% to 13%, and travelling rises from 2% to 7%. The response also calls the adults “young people” and refers to “acquaintances,” which does not accurately represent the chart categories. Playing sports appears only in 2008 at 7%, but this feature is barely reported. Give a clear overview and support it with accurate comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation around the main activities, and linking expressions such as “on the other hand,” “whereas” and “thus” show an attempt to connect comparisons. However, the response has no clear paragraph structure, and ideas run together in long, poorly punctuated sentences. The shift from working and sleeping to going out, relaxing and travelling is not clearly signposted, while the final sentence repeats earlier points rather than providing a distinct overview. Some connections are also confusing: “it was about 16 perct in 1958 and now only 16 perct” does not communicate a change. Separate the introduction, overview and detail paragraphs, and group related comparisons so the reader can follow the data.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response uses a small range of relevant activity vocabulary, including “working,” “sleeping,” “relaxing” and “travelling to work,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, vocabulary is limited and some choices are inaccurate or unclear. “Acquaintances” is not an appropriate substitute for “friends/family,” and “young people” misidentifies the chart’s working adults. Repeated wording such as “time spent” and “increased” also restricts variety. Numerous spelling errors—including “thier,” “perct,” “comapred” and “whwereas”—make the text harder to read and sometimes obscure the intended meaning. Use precise chart labels and practise spelling common terms before writing your final response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt to compare the years using structures such as “which is much less compared to 1958” and “whereas the time adults spent on sleeping decreased.” These attempts show some awareness of complex sentence forms, but control is inconsistent. Several sentences lack clear grammatical structure, for example, “during 1958 adults used to spend most of the time of thier day in working,” and the opening sentence has no clear punctuation or complete framing. Tense and agreement are also unreliable, as in “younger people spend” when describing the 2008 chart alongside past-time comparisons. Commas and full stops are largely absent, causing run-on sentences. Build shorter, complete sentences first, then combine comparisons with accurate clauses and punctuation.
