Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main overall pattern: work takes the largest share in both years and rises, while sleeping and socialising decline. Most figures are reported accurately, including work (33% to 42%), sleep (32% to 25%), and relaxing at home (8% to 13%). However, there are important misreadings: 19% in 1958 refers to going out with friends or family, not travelling, and the chart shows no sports figure for 1958; sports accounts for 7% in 2008. The overview also says adults spent the least time on sports, although this is not a valid comparison across both years. A clearer overview and more accurate treatment of the categories would make the summary more complete; some details, particularly the new sports category, are underdeveloped.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details about the activities, and it uses basic links such as “Overall” and “Furthermore.” This gives the reader a general sense of the comparison. However, progression is weakened by the order and grouping of information: the paragraph shifts from work and sleep to socialising, then home relaxation and commuting, without a clear organising principle. Some connections are also confusing, especially the sentence that describes 19% as time spent travelling with family or friends. The final sports comparison is difficult to follow and conflicts with the chart. Grouping increases together and decreases together, with clear references to each year, would improve cohesion and make the comparison easier to track.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic vocabulary to communicate the general subject, including “working,” “sleeping,” “relax,” and “activities.” However, the range is limited and several phrases are inaccurate or unnatural for describing a pie chart. For example, “spent their time to travel with family or friends” confuses socialising with commuting, while “rest in house” and “go for workplace” are awkward collocations. Spelling errors such as “Othere” and “plyaing” also reduce accuracy. Repetition of “spent” and “time” makes the description less precise. Use the chart’s category labels consistently—such as “going out with friends or family” and “travelling to work”—and choose concise reporting verbs like “accounted for” or “rose to.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts a mixture of simple statements and longer comparisons, and the reader can usually understand the intended meaning. However, errors in sentence structure and verb forms are frequent enough to make some sentences awkward or unclear. Examples include “The given pie charts illustrates,” where the plural subject needs a plural verb, and “adults spend their time,” which should use a past-tense form for the chart years. The construction “They were also used to rest” is not grammatically appropriate, and the final sentence, “It was 6% percent … which increases with only 1%,” has unclear reference and tense. Punctuation spacing is also inconsistent. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and build comparisons with complete, clearly structured clauses.
