Student answer (Band 6.5)
The following charts illustrate percentages of the day spent by working adults on various activities in 1958 and 2008.
Overall, there have been changes in the time spent of a working adult such as the time spent working has been increased and the time spent sleeping has been decreased.
Moreover, time spent going out with friends/family have been decreased by 13%. Even with the improved roads and transportation time spent travelling to work has been increased by 5%. Time spent sleeping has been decreased by 7% and time spent working has increased 9% leaving less time for the working adult to do other things.
However, time spent by a working adult relaxing at home has increased over the years by 5%, meaning people prefer more to relax at home than going with friends and family.
Time spent playing sports is almost the same in both the years. Meaning even with the busy schedule, sports still remains to be a part of the daily activities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You identify the main shifts accurately: working rose from 33% to 42%, sleeping fell from 32% to 25%, and going out with friends or family dropped by 13 percentage points. You also report the increases in commuting and relaxing at home correctly. The overview highlights the broad change toward more work and less sleep, and the response covers the chart’s main categories. However, the claim that sports was “almost the same” is not supported: it appears only in 2008, at 7%, and is absent from the 1958 chart. The explanation about improved roads and transportation is also speculative rather than chart-based. A more precise overview would mention the new sports category and avoid inferring reasons or preferences.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable progression, beginning with an overview and then describing changes across the categories. Linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “However” help signal movement between points, and the main comparisons are generally easy to follow. This meets the lower-band expectation of an overall coherent arrangement. To make the progression more consistently clear, group related figures into a more deliberate comparison rather than presenting several separate statements in succession. The final sports point is detached from the preceding comparison and repeats the idea of a busy schedule without chart evidence. Some sentence fragments, including “Meaning even with the busy schedule…”, also interrupt the flow. Use complete sentences and clearer paragraph-level grouping.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use enough topic vocabulary to communicate the chart, including “percentages,” “activities,” “decreased,” and “increased.” Repeating the activity labels also keeps the comparisons understandable. However, the range is somewhat repetitive, especially the repeated pattern “time spent … has increased/decreased,” and some expressions are imprecise or unnatural. “Time spent of a working adult” is not a natural way to describe the data, while “improved roads and transportation” introduces an unsupported idea. “Prefer more to relax at home” is also awkward phrasing. Aim for more precise chart language, such as describing proportions that “rose,” “fell,” or “accounted for,” and avoid wording that suggests causes or preferences not shown by the charts.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, and the main comparisons can generally be understood. However, errors in agreement, verb forms, and sentence construction remain noticeable. For example, “time spent working has been increased” uses an incorrect passive form; “friends/family have been decreased” has faulty agreement and verb construction; and “sports still remains” does not agree with the plural subject. The fragment “Meaning even with the busy schedule…” should be joined to a complete sentence. There are also awkward patterns such as “time spent of a working adult.” Practise forming accurate comparative clauses with simple past verbs—for example, “the proportion spent working increased”—and check subject–verb agreement and sentence completeness.
