Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie chart is on how much percentage of the day is spent by working professionals on various activities of the day in 1958 and 2008. As we can see that in 1958, 33% of a day were working only whereas in 2008 it got increased to 44% in day which approximately half a day. And the graph is also telling that people in 1958 tends to spend more time with their family and friends than in 2008, as it decreased. Also people have slightly reduced their sleep in 2008 than to 1958. Time to Commuting to work has also been increased by 5% in 2008. People in 2008 has been spending slightly more time to relax at home than of 1958. In 2008 people are playing sport on daily basis and have dedicated time for that.
Therefore, these diagram shows that people travel, work and relax at home more with reduced sleep in 2008 while 1958s people spent more time with friends and family.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify several important comparisons, including the rise in working time, the decline in time with friends and family, and the reduction in sleep. The closing summary also captures the broad shift towards work and away from socialising. However, some figures are inaccurate: work in 2008 was 42%, not 44%, and the increase in commuting was five percentage points, from 2% to 7%. You also omit the 2008 figure for socialising (6%) and do not mention that playing sports accounts for 7% in 2008. The overview is relevant, but the report would be clearer and more complete if it gave accurate figures for the main categories and compared the largest shares, especially work and sleep.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response follows a generally understandable order, moving through work, socialising, sleep, commuting, relaxation and sport before giving a concluding summary. This gives the reader a coherent overall picture. However, most information is placed in one paragraph, so the overview and supporting comparisons are not clearly separated. Linking phrases such as “Also,” “Therefore,” and repeated references to “in 2008” make the progression somewhat mechanical. Some references are also unclear, as in “as it decreased,” where the reader must infer the exact category and amount. Organise the response into a brief overview followed by grouped comparisons, and use clearer links between related figures to make the progression more controlled.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for describing the charts, including “increased,” “reduced,” “spend more time,” and “commuting to work,” so the main comparisons are understandable. However, some expressions are imprecise or unnatural for an academic report, such as “how much percentage,” “working only,” and “dedicated time for that.” The repeated use of “people” and “time” also limits variety, while “graph” is not the most accurate label for pie charts. Aim for precise terms such as “proportion,” “share,” and “accounted for,” and use natural collocations when describing activities. This would make the vocabulary more flexible and appropriately formal without changing the meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of sentence forms, including comparisons and a concluding sentence beginning “Therefore,” and the main message is usually clear. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with agreement, articles, and verb forms. For example, “33% of a day were working” has an incorrect subject–verb relationship, while “people in 1958 tends” and “people in 2008 has been spending” do not agree in number or use an appropriate tense. The phrase “than to 1958” also shows difficulty forming comparisons. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and plural agreement, and check each sentence for a clear subject and verb. More controlled complex sentences would strengthen the range.
