Student answer (Band 5.5)

There are two pie charts in the figure. Both are showing percentage of adults spent time during the day in the year 1958 and 2008.

First pie chart is showing how adults spent their time in year 1958. A vast majority of segment showing most of the adult spent their time in working. Second major portion showing that some adults around nineteen percent had spent their time in enjoying the vacation with family or friends. About same percentage of adults spent their leisure time in the bed sleeping. About eight percent of people had spent their time in relaxing at home. While only 2 percent of adults spent their precious time in travelling for work.

On the contrary to the first one,in the year 2008 there is a significant increse in the percentage of people who went out for work, but to my surprise that adults who spent time in sleeping decresed to 25 percent. There is a new addition of sports activity in the adults of year 2008.

If we compare both charts, the conclusion is simple

percentage of working adults increased significantly in year 2008. There is also addition of sport activity in the adults of the year 2008.But adults of 1958 spent their significant amount of time with family but percentage decreaed to mere 6 percent in the year 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify several important features, including the rise in working time, the fall in sleeping and socialising, and the appearance of sport in 2008. However, some reporting is inaccurate or incomplete: in 1958, working accounted for 33%, but you describe it only as a “vast majority” without giving the figure; the 2008 increase is not quantified, and “went out for work” misrepresents travelling to work. You also omit the 2008 figures for relaxing at home and travelling. The overview is present in the final paragraph, but it repeats selected points rather than summarising the main changes across the charts. More precise figures and a clearer overview would make the response more complete and better supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic structure: it introduces the charts, discusses 1958, then 2008, and ends with a comparison. This gives the reader some organisation, and phrases such as “On the contrary” and “If we compare both charts” signal transitions. However, the progression is not consistently clear: the 2008 paragraph gives only a few details, while the conclusion repeats the rise in working and the decline in socialising. Some linking is awkward or inaccurate, particularly “On the contrary,” which does not express a direct contrast between the charts. Grouping the largest changes together and using clearer references to each year would improve the flow and reduce repetition.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant vocabulary for describing proportions and change, including “percentage,” “significant increase,” “decreased,” and “addition.” This is enough to communicate the general topic, but the range is limited and several choices are imprecise for chart description. “Enjoying the vacation” does not accurately describe going out with friends or family, while “went out for work” confuses commuting with working. Phrases such as “precious time” and “mere 6 percent” are also too subjective for an academic report. Spelling errors in “increse” and “decreaed” further reduce accuracy. Prefer neutral, precise terms for activities and changes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of simple and longer sentences, and the main message is generally understandable. However, errors occur frequently in basic sentence patterns and in attempts at more complex structures. For example, “Both are showing percentage of adults spent time” lacks a clear grammatical construction, and “most of the adult spent their time” has problems with number and agreement. Tense and verb forms are also inconsistent, as in “had spent” when describing chart data. Punctuation is sometimes missing after introductory phrases, as in “On the contrary to the first one,in the year 2008.” Use straightforward present-tense reporting structures, such as “The chart shows that…,” and check articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries.
