Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie charts illustrate the percentage of how the working adults spent their days in the years 1958 and 20008.

Overall, it can be seen from the graph that the workmen spent most of their time working over the period. Whereas travelling to work constitutes to the lowest percentage of the pie charts.

In 1958, employees' working rate was 33 percent which rose to 42 percent in 2008. The percentage of workers' sleeping hours decreased from 32 percent in 1958 to 25 percent in 2008. Travelling to work accounted for only 2 percent in 1958 and slightly increased by 7 percent in 2008. Going out with friends or family experienced a sharp decline in 2008, which went from 19 percent in 1958 to 6 percent only. There was a slight decrease in playing sports throughout the period. Time spent by workers relaxing at home increased a little by 13 percent in 2008 from 8 percent in 1958.

On the whole, it is noticeable from the pie charts that workers were occupied with their work the most in both the years. In contrast, travelling to work accounted for the lowest percentage in 1958 and 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main pattern that working took the largest share in both years and report several accurate comparisons, including work rising from 33% to 42%, sleep falling from 32% to 25%, and socialising dropping from 19% to 6%. However, the overview is not fully accurate: travelling was the smallest category in 1958, but in 2008 it was tied with playing sports at 7%, rather than being the lowest on its own. The statement that sports decreased is also unsupported, since the chart gives no 1958 figure for this activity. A stronger response would describe the new 2008 category and compare the main increases and decreases more precisely, while avoiding claims that cannot be verified from the charts.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph of comparisons, and a concluding summary. The figures are generally presented in a sensible sequence, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “In contrast,” and “from…to…” help readers follow the comparisons. However, the final paragraph repeats the overview almost exactly, so it adds little to the progression. The contrast beginning “Whereas” is also left as a sentence fragment, and the repeated references to the lowest category create an unclear impression because travelling is tied with sports in 2008. To improve, use the final paragraph space for a distinct comparison or omit the repeated conclusion, and make links between categories more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “accounted for,” “decline,” “percentage,” and “increased,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal alternatives, such as “employees” and “constitutes,” although some choices are inaccurate or unnatural in context. “Workmen” is not an appropriate synonym for working adults, while “working rate” does not clearly describe the share of the day spent working. The phrase “constitutes to” is an incorrect collocation, and “increased a little by 13 percent” obscures that the figure rose to 13%. Aim for precise chart language and natural collocations rather than varying terms at the expense of accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and most comparisons are understandable. For example, the sentence comparing sleeping time uses a clear past-tense structure, while “which went from 19 percent…to 6 percent” attempts a relative clause. Some grammatical errors remain, however. “Whereas travelling to work constitutes to the lowest percentage” is a fragment and has an incorrect verb pattern; “in the years 1958 and 20008” also contains a date-form error. In “There was a slight decrease in playing sports throughout the period,” the construction is grammatically possible but does not fit the available data. Practise complete overview sentences and check verb patterns, tense consistency, and punctuation when joining contrasting ideas.
