Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify the topic and give a broad overview, noting that work took the largest share and that travel and relaxing increased while sleeping and socialising decreased. However, the response reports very little of the chart: it gives only some 1958 figures and does not describe the 2008 values or compare the two years in detail. The statement that work was largest is accurate, but the overview could also highlight its rise from 33% to 42%, alongside the fall in going out from 19% to 6%. The response is substantially below the required 150 words, so the main features remain minimally addressed. Include key figures for both years and explain the most important changes.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is a basic structure: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph beginning “Looking at the details”. The overview also uses “Although” and “whereas” to signal contrast. However, the response ends before developing the details, so there is little progression from the overview to a complete comparison. Some linking is awkward: “Although the percentage … were increased. whereas…” is split into an incomplete contrast, and the details paragraph lists figures without clearly connecting them. Organise the report into a clear overview followed by comparisons of the main figures across both years. Use linking words to show relationships between data, rather than leaving contrasts as fragments.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant basic vocabulary such as “proportion”, “accounted”, “percentage”, and “decreased”, and the reader can generally identify the activities being discussed. However, the range is limited, and several spelling and word-choice errors reduce clarity, including “pie chat”, “illustraes”, “percantage”, and “spent at home”. The phrase “accounted at 33%” is also an inaccurate collocation. Use precise chart language consistently, such as “accounted for”, “made up”, “rose”, and “fell”, and check spelling carefully. Naming the categories exactly as shown—“relaxing at home” and “going out with friends/family”—would also make the comparisons clearer.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts a complex overview sentence using “Although” and “whereas”, and it includes a simple introductory sentence. However, the range is limited and errors occur frequently. For example, “the working took up the largest proportion of the both years” has problems with article use and sentence structure, while “the percentage … were increased” has subject–verb agreement and verb-form errors. “In 1958,working accounted at 33% respectively” also has punctuation and grammatical-pattern problems. The final sentence, “The sleeping and spent at home in 32%and 8%,” is incomplete and difficult to interpret. Practise complete sentences with accurate subjects and verbs, and use patterns such as “Work accounted for 33%” and “Sleeping represented 32%.”
