Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart illustrates where the employed people spend their time from 1958 to 2008. Overall, people are involve in 6 activates including playing sport, sleeping, relaxing at home and working. People spend most of their time at work which is followed closely by sleeping. Travelling to work consume the lowest time in 1958 while the minimum portion where the people spend the time is gathering with friends and family in 2008.

Looking into the more details, in 2008 people spend equal time in sports and travelling to work which is around 7 percent. From 1958 to 2008 working hours are increased while the sleeping hours are decreased. In 2008 people prefer to relax at home instead of going outside.

A clear look into the details also shows that in 1958 people were spending 8 percent of their time in travelling which increased to 13 percent in 2008.

In conclusion the major part of time is used is the working and sleeping.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify several important patterns, including the rise in working time, the fall in sleeping time, and the fact that travelling was the smallest category in 1958 while socialising was smallest in 2008. However, some key details are inaccurate: in 1958, travelling accounted for 2%, not 8%, and relaxing at home rose from 8% to 13%, rather than travelling rising to 13%. The overview also says work was followed closely by sleep, which fits 1958 but not 2008, when work was 42% and sleep 25%. You mention six activities overall, but do not clearly explain that sports appears only in the 2008 chart. More accurate comparisons and a clearer overview would make the summary more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction and overview are followed by detail paragraphs and a conclusion. The main comparisons are generally grouped in a sensible order, and phrases such as “Overall” and “Looking into the more details” signal transitions. However, the progression is weakened by repetition: the conclusion repeats that working and sleeping take the largest shares without adding a useful summary, and the final detail paragraph introduces a comparison but assigns the figures to the wrong activity. Some links between ideas are also unclear, particularly “In 2008 people prefer to relax at home instead of going outside,” which does not specify the chart categories being compared. Organise the details by activity and use clearer references to each year.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing charts, including “increased,” “decreased,” “portion,” and “percent,” so the reader can follow the general message. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “people are involve in 6 activates,” “consume the lowest time,” and “the major part of time is used is.” “Going outside” is also too broad to represent the specific category of going out with friends or family. These choices sometimes make the intended comparison less precise, even though the overall topic remains understandable. Aim for standard chart language and accurate activity labels, and check spelling and word forms before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more developed sentence forms, including comparisons across years, and most of the message remains understandable. Some grammatical errors, however, recur. For example, “people are involve” needs a correct verb form, while “working hours are increased” and “the sleeping hours are decreased” use unsuitable tense and aspect for describing changes between two past dates. The sentence “A clear look into the details also shows that…” is followed by a figure comparison whose structure is understandable but whose subject is unclear. There are also problems with articles, agreement, and sentence construction in “the major part of time is used is the working and sleeping.” Use consistent past-tense reporting and check each sentence for a clear subject and verb.
