Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie charts illustrate the time spending of labouring adults of a specific country in 1958 and 2008. Overall the largest proportion of adults time went in working in 1958 whereas in the year 2008 42% of the total was spent in working. In 1958 travelling to work was the smallest proportion as 2% time spent while the most time consuming task of 2008 were playing sports and travelling to work as 7% for both.
Relaxing at home covered only 8% time but it increased in 2008 to 13%. The second most time consumer task was sleeping as 32% in 1958 and surprisingly it fell to 25% in the year 2008. Going out with family and friends cutted 19% time of adults in 1958 however this percent dropped to only 6% for adults time consumption in 2008. Playing sports became less time consuming in the year 1958 as compared to 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify several important changes, including the rise in working time from 33% to 42%, the fall in sleeping from 32% to 25%, and the decline in socialising from 19% to 6%. The overview also notes that commuting was the smallest category in 1958. However, it misidentifies the largest 1958 category: working (33%) was only slightly higher than sleeping (32%), and the response says working was largest without acknowledging this close comparison. More importantly, the statement that sports and commuting were the most time-consuming activities in 2008 reverses the chart: both were among the smallest categories, while working was largest. The final sentence about sports is unclear and does not report its 2008 figure. More accurate selection and comparison of the main features would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an opening overview is followed by details about relaxing, sleeping, socialising and sports. This gives the reader a basic route through the information, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “whereas” and “however” help signal comparisons. However, the overview combines a correct point about 1958 commuting with an incorrect claim about the leading 2008 activities, which weakens the progression of the report. The second paragraph also moves between categories without a clear organising principle, and the final sentence about sports is disconnected from the preceding comparison. Grouping increases together and decreases together, and using clearer references to each year, would make the information easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing proportions and change, including “largest proportion,” “increased,” “fell,” and “dropped.” These choices generally make the intended comparisons understandable. However, several expressions are unnatural or imprecise for a chart report, such as “time spending,” “labouring adults,” “time consumer task,” and “cut[t]ed 19% time.” The phrase “most time consuming” is also misleading when applied to sports and commuting, since these are small shares in 2008. Aim for standard collocations such as “time spent,” “working adults,” “accounted for,” and “the largest share.” More precise vocabulary would help distinguish the amount of time allocated to an activity from how demanding or time-consuming it is.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including comparisons with “whereas” and “however,” and most of the message remains understandable. Some grammatical errors nevertheless reduce accuracy. For example, “adults time” needs a possessive form, and “2% time spent” lacks a suitable grammatical construction such as “2% of the time was spent.” In “the most time consuming task of 2008 were,” the singular subject and plural verb do not agree; the sentence also needs a clearer structure. “Going out with family and friends cutted 19% time” contains an incorrect verb form and an incomplete pattern. Practise accurate percentage constructions and check agreement, possessives and verb forms while retaining your attempts at complex comparisons.
