Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the two years and report several relevant figures, including working (33% to 42%), sleeping (32% to 25%), and socialising (19% to 6%). However, the overview is unclear and includes inaccuracies: travel was not the lowest activity in both years, since it was 2% in 1958 but 7% in 2008, tied with sport; sport is shown only in 2008, not at 7% in both years. The statement that relaxing at home was “less” in 2008 also reverses the increase from 8% to 13%. The travel comparison is unfinished, and the response is 133 words, below the required 150. Add a clear overview and accurately compare the main changes, including the new sports category.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic structure: an introduction, an attempted overview, and a paragraph reporting figures. This gives the reader some sense of the topic and the years being compared. However, progression is limited because the details are presented as a sequence of separate statements rather than grouped into clear comparisons. The overview sentence is difficult to follow, and the travel sentence (“Travelling at work activity is increased 2 percentage while in 2008 this activity”) is incomplete, interrupting the flow. Linking words such as “while” are used, but not always to make the relationship between figures clear. Organise the body around increases and decreases, and use complete comparison sentences with clear references to each year.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant basic vocabulary for describing the charts, including “increased,” “decreased,” “percentage,” and activity labels such as “Sleeping” and “Relaxing at home.” This is enough to communicate the general subject, but the range is limited and several phrases are repetitive or imprecise. For example, “the working activity is the majority section” and “the lowest section activity” are awkward descriptions, while “Travelling at work” does not accurately express travel to work. “The activity is decreased 6 percentage” also does not clearly convey the change. Use standard chart language such as “accounted for,” “rose from … to …,” and “fell to …,” while varying sentence phrasing and retaining the chart’s exact category names.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
Most sentences use simple present-tense reporting patterns, and the reader can generally identify the figures being discussed. However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and errors are frequent enough to make some comparisons difficult to understand. Examples include “the working activities is increased by 42 percentage,” where the verb form and comparison structure are faulty, and “Travelling at work activity is increased 2 percentage while in 2008 this activity,” which is incomplete. There are also problems with articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries, as in “in both pie chart” and the run-on final sentence. Practise complete past-tense comparison structures, for example, “The proportion working rose from 33% in 1958 to 42% in 2008,” and check agreement and punctuation.
