Many customs and traditional ways of behavior are no longer relevant to modern life and not worth keeping.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Nowadays, people have seen adopting the modern lifestyles to have respect in the community and they believe traditional methods to greet or behave are not required anymore. However, i think it should be there to educate the next generation about the ethics and cultural importance.
Firstly, celebations and family gathers teaches people about their past and what is really means to be part of it. For example, Thankgiving and Christmas,in Canada, reminds them about the values and history. Custom is important to stay connected with roots as it links between past and present like a living. it also creates a sense of belonging. Shared practices bring people together and help them understand what is expected in social situations. Simple acts, like touching the feet of elders or shaking hands with a stranger, communicate respect and build trust within a community.
However, traditions are not fixed forever. As societies change, some customs fade while new ones appear. Immigrants, for example, often blend the traditions of their homeland with those of their new country, creating rich and diverse cultures. Some old practices are questioned when they no longer fit modern values of fairness and equality.
In conclusion, customs and traditional ways of behavior are the threads that hold society together. By respecting meaningful traditions while remaining open to change, communities can honor their heritage and grow toward a better future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear: you disagree that traditions are no longer worth keeping, while accepting that some should change. You address both sides through examples such as family celebrations, greeting elders, and immigrant communities, and the conclusion reinforces this balanced view. The discussion of belonging and social respect is relevant, but some points are asserted rather than fully explained; for instance, the Thanksgiving and Christmas example does not clearly show which values or history these customs teach. The response also falls 22 words short of the required minimum, so there is less space to develop your reasons and examples. Explain one example in more detail and connect it directly to why a tradition remains valuable.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear overall progression: an introduction states your view, the first body paragraph explains the value of customs, the second recognises that traditions can change, and the conclusion summarises your position. Linking expressions such as “Firstly,” “However,” and “In conclusion” make the stages easy to follow. Within the first body paragraph, however, several ideas—celebrations, cultural roots, belonging, and greetings—are placed together without enough explanation of how they connect. The phrase “like a living” also interrupts the flow and leaves the comparison unclear. Group related points and use a sentence to show how each example supports the paragraph’s main claim; this would make the progression more consistently smooth.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a relevant range of vocabulary, including “sense of belonging,” “shared practices,” “fairness and equality,” and “rich and diverse cultures.” These phrases help express abstract ideas about community and change, and the meaning is generally clear. There are also some inaccurate or awkward choices, such as “family gathers,” “Custom is important to stay connected with roots,” and “like a living,” which reduce precision. Spelling errors such as “celebations” and “Thankgiving” are noticeable, while “i” should be capitalised as “I.” Aim for more natural collocations and proofread spelling carefully. For example, describe customs as helping people “stay connected to their roots” rather than using the current phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use both simple sentences and more complex structures, including “As societies change, some customs fade while new ones appear” and the concluding clause beginning “By respecting meaningful traditions.” Most sentences communicate their meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. In “celebrations and family gathers teaches,” the plural subject requires a plural verb, and “what is really means” has an incorrect verb form. The opening sentence, “people have seen adopting,” is also not grammatically well formed. There are punctuation and capitalisation issues, including the lowercase “i” and missing spaces after commas. Review subject–verb agreement and verb patterns, then check sentence boundaries and punctuation; these corrections would improve accuracy while preserving your range.
