IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Most of the students are not getting admissions in science subjects to study at university. In most of the countries, specific universities are no longer providing oppurtunities to students to take admission in science subjects. Other that that, there are some reasons of not getting enrolled in science courses.
First of all, as we know that this is the era of technology and personally most of the learners want to be in the field of modern technology rather than in science. Secondly, in some countries medical field is at lost and there are not enough jobs for doctors. Even, after completing specialization doctors are jobless and not able to do the work they deserve.
The effects of not taking science courses vary accordingly. In some countries, they have oppurtunities for students but the learners do not take interest in sceince subjects because of modernization. However, they prefer learning digital skills and marketing. But, if the interest remained same than there will be problem for the students and upcoming generations because of less scientific research and values. There should be equal admissions or specific criteria for every student. Also, the educationalist can arrange IQ test and according to the results they should give admissions to the students.
All in all, I would say that we can overcome the problem by taking smaller steps, and by introducing the courses that aligns with students' interest. Government of such countries should introduce vacancies for science students also so that ther rate of getting enrolled in this subject remained same.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You attempt to address both causes and effects, and the point about limited medical employment offers a relevant possible reason for students avoiding science. You also identify reduced scientific research as a potential social consequence. However, the response only partially answers the question because its opening misinterprets the issue: the task concerns students choosing not to study science, whereas you say they are “not getting admissions” and suggest universities are not providing opportunities. The effects are also not clearly developed; the discussion shifts to students’ preferences and admissions criteria rather than explaining wider consequences for society. Develop a small number of relevant causes and social effects with clear explanations or examples, and maintain a consistent focus on the question.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, a paragraph on causes, a paragraph on effects and a concluding recommendation. Sequencing phrases such as “First of all,” “Secondly” and “All in all” help signal the stages of your answer. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear: the effects paragraph moves from students’ interests to research, admissions criteria and IQ tests without showing how these points connect. Some linking is mechanical, and “However” does not establish a clear contrast in its sentence. Use topic sentences that directly identify each cause or effect, then explain the connection between ideas. Clearer referencing and fewer unrelated recommendations would make the overall progression easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “modern technology,” “scientific research” and “digital skills,” so the reader can generally understand your subject matter. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, sometimes making the intended meaning less clear. For example, “medical field is at lost” and “the work they deserve” do not express the employment problem precisely; “take admission” and “interest remained same” are also unnatural in this context. There are spelling errors such as “oppurtunities,” “sceince” and “ther.” Build a more accurate set of topic phrases for university study, employment and social consequences, and check spelling and collocations carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional construction in “if the interest remained same than there will be problem.” The main ideas are usually understandable, and some sentences are formed clearly. However, errors in sentence structure, articles, agreement and verb forms recur. For instance, “there will be problem” needs an article, while “courses that aligns” has a subject–verb agreement error; the conditional sentence also mixes forms and uses an unsuitable result connector. “Most of the students are not getting admissions” is grammatically possible but does not accurately frame the task. Practise building accurate complex sentences with consistent conditional forms, and proofread articles, agreement and punctuation.
