IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
It is argued that mostly students are shifting from studying science to other subjects of their interest. This is because most of the students nowadays want to pursue their career in the field in which they are mainly interested.Meanwhile, most of the students are studying "Business and Entrepreneurship" so they can be financially independent and learn business related tactics that will help them later in life.
The cause for students being attracted towards other fields is their thinking about the practical skills in life. Most of the students think that learning Business and Entrepreneurship can be rewarding because of the "E-commerce" and "Dropshipping" from which they can do business from anywhere in the world. These fields have already helped a number of people succeed in life because they knew the fundamentals and demand hence,They started at the right time for which this field became rewarding for them and for the record some of them are already millionaire.
In contrast, most students are still learning and pursuing their degree in science. The amount of students that have shifted away from science isn't small either so,this shift hasn't changed mostly things because a huge number of students are still learning science and they chose to pursue their career in the technical fields of science rewarding others with their knowledge and becoming what they dreamed .
In conclusion,Everyone is pursuing their career in the field they like and there is still a large number if students studying science. Now as the students started studying subjects of their choice they also end up achieving better results than studying subjects that they once didn't like as much.So there isn't much change but it got a lot better than it was before.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify a possible cause—students choosing subjects they find interesting—and give examples involving business, e-commerce and dropshipping. However, the response only partially answers the question. The causes are discussed at length, but the effects on society are not clearly explained: the claim that the shift “hasn't changed mostly things” is vague and does not show what consequences follow. The essay also shifts between saying students are moving away from science and asserting that a large number still study it, without establishing the scale or significance of the trend. To strengthen the response, explain specific social effects, such as shortages of scientific professionals or slower technological progress, and support each main idea with a clear explanation or example. A consistent position is also needed in the conclusion, rather than the unsupported claim that things have “got a lot better.”
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has an introduction, body paragraphs and a conclusion, and it uses linking expressions such as “Meanwhile,” “In contrast” and “In conclusion.” These features give it some basic organisation. However, progression is difficult to follow because the second body paragraph develops business as a cause, while the next paragraph largely contradicts the premise by saying many students still study science and that the shift has not changed much. The effects requested by the task do not receive a distinct, logically developed section. Some connectors are also used where the relationship between ideas is unclear, and long sentences joined with commas make the argument harder to track. Organise the essay around causes and then societal effects, with each paragraph focused on one main point and linked to the next through clear explanation.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “financially independent,” “practical skills,” “technical fields” and “fundamentals.” Terms such as “E-commerce” and “Dropshipping” make the example specific, although they are more narrowly focused on business than on the broader question. Some word choices and collocations are imprecise or repetitive: “rewarding” appears several times, “millionaire” is used awkwardly in “some of them are already millionaire,” and “changed mostly things” is unclear. “The amount of students” is also an unsuitable expression for countable people. Aim for more precise academic phrasing and vary repeated words; this will help you express the causes and social consequences more clearly without relying on broad or informal wording.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because” and “so,” and the main meaning is generally recoverable. However, control is uneven, particularly in long sentences where several ideas are joined without clear punctuation. For example, “These fields have already helped a number of people succeed in life because they knew the fundamentals and demand hence,They started…” contains an unclear clause connection and incorrect capitalisation after a comma. There are also errors in agreement and sentence construction, as in “some of them are already millionaire” and “the amount of students.” The conclusion’s “a large number if students” appears to contain a typing error that affects accuracy. Use shorter, clearly punctuated sentences when explaining complex cause-and-effect relationships, and check articles, plurals, agreement and clause boundaries.
