Student answer (Band 7.0)
Education plays an important role in personal and professional development. Many people believe that students are not interested in choosing science at university. This essay will discuss the underlying reasons behind this trend and its long-term impacts on society.
There are several reasons which accelerate this development. First and foremost, studying science at university is demanding and challenging, requires concentration, discipline and consistency, in which young people lagging behind. This is because online platforms have influenced people's mindset negatively as they became more impatient and want everything quickly. Additionally, low-income families cannot afford science subjects at university because they are quite expensive. For example, in many developing countries, students dropped their interested science subjects just because they cannot afford significant amount of university fees. Moreover, many young people are unaware of the career opportunities available in scientific fields and are attracted to disciplines that appear to offer better financial prospects.
This development has detrimental impacts on society. Lack of professionals such as doctors and engineers leads to scarcity of treatments in hospitals, medical innovations and infrastructure development, which eventually effects economy and quality of life. For instance, during pandemic COVID-19, many countries faced problems to arrange doctors and hospitals for their citizens, which ultimately increased the number of deaths. Furthermore, if there are fewer doctors or engineers, in a country, it is more likely to put pressure on the government and taxpayers.
In conclusion, lack of interest, unawareness, and high fees are the key reasons behind this growing problem, which negatively impacts society. Lack of treatments, hospitals and infrastructure reduce the quality of life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The essay addresses both parts of the prompt: the causes (difficulty, cost, lack of awareness) and the effects (shortage of professionals, economic impact). The ideas are relevant and generally well-supported with examples, such as the mention of the COVID-19 pandemic to illustrate the impact of a doctor shortage. However, some points could be developed further; for instance, the link between online platforms and a lack of discipline is a strong idea but is stated rather briefly. Overall, the response is focused and maintains a clear position throughout, fulfilling the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'Additionally', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. While the transition between the causes and effects is clear, some of the sentence-level cohesion is slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall structure supports the development of the argument well.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary is generally appropriate for the task, with some good topic-specific collocations such as 'professional development', 'scientific fields', and 'medical innovations'. There are a few instances of slightly awkward phrasing, such as 'students dropped their interested science subjects' (should be 'lost interest in science subjects') and 'effects economy' (should be 'affects the economy'). Despite these minor inaccuracies, the range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey complex ideas clearly and demonstrates an awareness of academic style.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'in which young people lagging behind' (should be 'in which young people lag behind') and 'if there are fewer doctors or engineers, in a country' (unnecessary comma). Additionally, there are minor issues with article usage and verb agreement. However, these errors do not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout. The student demonstrates a reasonable command of complex sentence forms, though more consistent accuracy would be required for a higher band.
