Student answer (Band 6.5)

In recent years, few students are enrolling to study science at university. In my view, this problem is primarily caused by students reliance on other easy subjects and required higher attention of students. This essay will examine these underlying causes and propose practical measures to reduce unequal subject selection, thereby increasing innovations and encourage nation's development.

The issue has led to several serious problems in modern society. One major problem is students often choose less challenging subjects, which may have limited educational burden and easy job access. For example, students focus on subjects such as, language, history, art, and dance, allow them to complete within a certain time with a limited education pressure. Another significant concern is high demands of science-related subjects, as it required full attendance, everyday compulsory on-campus study, discipline, and associated ethical responsibilities after completion of course.

With increasing dependency on other subjects than science can lead to serious issues on individuals and society as a whole. Firstly, it may weaken science-related fields such as medical and engineering, which not only impact on the economy of the country but also hinder the innovations. For example, during recent pandemic of Covid-19 science subjects and related fields of medicine and pharmacy played a crucial role in the development of vaccines. Secondly, science subjects also have a essential part in infrastructural development of a nation. Subsequently, a country with limited science students may have detrimental effect on the overall development.

In conclusion, although the problems cannot be overlooked as they also have negative impacts on people and their surroundings. In my opinion, governments should implement educational campaigns for students to overcome these problems and parents should take the responsibility to support their children for completing such challenging subjects.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: causes and effects. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The causes are identified as the perceived difficulty of science versus 'easier' subjects, but the explanation of these causes is slightly repetitive. The effects on society are clearly linked to innovation and infrastructure, with a relevant example regarding the Covid-19 pandemic. While the position is clear, the conclusion introduces a new idea about government campaigns and parental responsibility that was not previously discussed in the body paragraphs, which slightly weakens the overall coherence of the argument. Overall, the response is relevant and covers all requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'With increasing dependency on other subjects than science can lead to...', which lacks a clear subject. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, and some sentences feel disjointed. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, causes, effects, and conclusion, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to express ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'infrastructural development', 'pandemic', and 'innovations'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'students reliance' (missing apostrophe), 'limited educational burden', and 'everyday compulsory on-campus study'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of the writing. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on more natural collocations and ensure grammatical accuracy when using complex nouns.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the student attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and article usage (e.g., 'as it required' instead of 'requires', 'a essential part' instead of 'an essential part', and 'during recent pandemic' instead of 'during the recent pandemic'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some unnecessary commas, such as in the list 'subjects such as, language, history...'. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the essay, and the errors do not cause significant difficulty for the reader.
