Student answer (Band 6.5)
In recent years, few students are enrolling for science at university. In my view, this problem is primarily caused by students reliance on other easy subjects and science required higher attention of students. This essay will examine these underlying causes and propose practical measures to reduce unequal subject selection, thereby increasing innovations and encouraging nation's development.
The issue has led to several serious problems in modern society. One major problem is students often choose less challenging subjects, which may have limited educational burden and easy job access. For example, students focus on subjects such as, language, history, art, and dance, allowing them to complete within a certain time with a limited education pressure. Another significant concern is high demands of science-related subjects, as it required full attendance, everyday compulsory on-campus study, discipline, and associated ethical responsibilities after completion of course.
With increasing dependency on other subjects than science can lead to serious issues on individuals and society as a whole. Firstly, it may weaken science-related fields such as medical and engineering, which not only impact on the economy of the country but also hinder the innovations. For example, during recent pandemic of Covid-19 science subjects and related fields of medicine and pharmacy played a crucial role in the development of vaccines. Secondly, science subjects also have a essential part in infrastructural development of a nation. Subsequently, a country with limited science students may have a detrimental effect on the overall development.
In conclusion, although the problems cannot be overlooked as they also have negative impacts on people and their surroundings. In my opinion, governments should implement educational campaigns for students to overcome these problems and parents should take the responsibility to support their children for completing such challenging subjects.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: causes and effects. The position is clear from the introduction. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The explanation of why science is 'demanding' is a bit list-like, and the link between the causes and the specific effects on society could be more deeply explored. While the essay covers the requirements, the analysis remains at a somewhat general level. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific, nuanced examples of how the lack of science graduates impacts specific sectors beyond just a general mention of the economy or infrastructure.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'One major problem', 'Another significant concern', and 'Firstly', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as the opening of the conclusion, which is grammatically incomplete ('although the problems cannot be overlooked as they also have negative impacts...'). The referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that every sentence contributes directly to the progression of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'underlying causes', 'detrimental effect', and 'infrastructural development'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'science required higher attention' (should be 'requires more attention') and 'limited educational burden'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of the argument. Expanding your range of collocations and ensuring accurate word forms would help improve this score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and subject-verb agreement, such as 'science required higher attention' and 'science subjects also have a essential part'. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some awkward phrasings, such as 'students reliance on other easy subjects'. To improve, focus on ensuring consistent tense usage and refining the accuracy of complex sentence structures, as these errors occur frequently enough to be noticeable throughout the text.
