IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In many countries, many students are not choosing to study science at university for various reasons which is going to effect on our society.
In our country India, most people who studied intermediate BIPC should write an entrance exam called NEET to enter university. This exam very tough to crack it. Most of the students ends up with next course or dental etc., but not into the university. Some other students who have money will pay and join in university. It depends on how they studied and presented their exam. The students who even passed the exam will be on backdrop due to the fees structure because mostly are private colleges. In government colleges there or no proper faculty or labs or study materials to help them.
This result effects in where we can't see a good doctor in society. We will have very less in particular role based doctors who are highly professionals in their fields. We can see mostly general practitioners. We have many incidents with the doctors in our country malpractices or killing the people on the bed of operation theaters. we can see mostly private doctors where we should pay a lot of money for treatment. In our country depending on the money treatment varies to person to person also which effects the society. Poor people can't get the treatment while rich people enjoy luxurious treatment. We can see the difference right away with our eyes.
In my opinion, Doctors are also equal to god who perform surgeries to revive the lives. So they should give a fairer treatment to all the people not on money basis. In the same way government should take some kind of actions for the students to encourage study in universities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt—causes and effects—but the development is uneven. The focus is heavily skewed toward the medical education system in India rather than the broader issue of students choosing science at university. While the personal example is relevant, it lacks the necessary academic breadth to fully explore the global phenomenon requested. The ideas regarding the 'effects' are also somewhat narrow, focusing almost exclusively on the quality of doctors rather than the wider societal impact of a lack of scientific graduates. To improve, you should broaden your scope to include factors like career prospects, curriculum difficulty, or societal perceptions of science, and discuss the impact on innovation, technology, and economic development.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the progression of ideas is often disjointed. Transitions between sentences are frequently missing or mechanical, such as the abrupt shift from discussing entrance exams to the quality of doctors. The use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes repetitive. For example, the phrase 'In our country' is used to start paragraphs, which creates a repetitive structure. To reach a higher band, you should use a wider variety of linking words and phrases (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in light of this') to connect your ideas more fluidly and improve the logical flow between paragraphs.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. You rely on basic, repetitive phrasing such as 'most of the students', 'some other students', and 'we can see'. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'on backdrop' (likely meaning 'at a disadvantage') and 'killing the people on the bed of operation theaters' (which is informal and imprecise). To improve, focus on using more academic collocations and precise terminology related to education and societal issues. Avoid overly informal or emotive language, as this is an academic task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'most of the students ends up'), article usage, and sentence construction (e.g., 'This result effects in where we can't see...'). Some sentences are fragmented or run-on, which occasionally makes the meaning difficult to follow. While the reader can understand your main points, the high frequency of grammatical errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focus on mastering basic sentence structure, ensuring that subjects and verbs agree, and proofreading for common errors like missing articles or incorrect verb forms.
