Student answer (Band 5.5)

University students doesn't choose science in many countries. In this essay will be discussed the reason of these and how it will effect on society. For my opinion, students choose the topic at university which can be easily for them.

Overall, students have their own favorite subjects, because they can be easier, interesting or more confident. But in science for the learner it can be more difficult and not understanding the subject at all, which can attract to choose easier subject without science. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response is significantly under the required word count of 250 words, reaching only 111 words. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed. While the essay introduces the topic and mentions causes and effects, the ideas are severely underdeveloped. The discussion lacks depth, specific examples, or a clear conclusion. The failure to meet the minimum length requirement significantly impacts the ability to fully develop the response, resulting in a score that reflects the incomplete nature of the argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay lacks a clear structure. While there is an attempt at an introduction, the body paragraphs are not well-defined, and the progression of ideas is disjointed. Cohesive devices are used in a very limited and sometimes mechanical way, such as 'Overall' and 'Moreover', which do not effectively link the ideas. The paragraphing is insufficient, and the lack of a coherent flow makes it difficult for the reader to follow the argument. More effort is needed to organize ideas into logical, well-connected paragraphs.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is basic and repetitive. The student relies on simple words like 'choose', 'difficult', and 'subjects'. There is an attempt to use some academic vocabulary, but it is often used incorrectly, such as 'attract to choose' or 'it effect more than we think'. The range is insufficient to express complex ideas clearly. To improve, the student should focus on learning collocations and more precise academic terminology related to education and societal impacts.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text that occasionally impede communication. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('University students doesn't choose'), incorrect word forms ('it will effect' instead of 'affect'), and awkward phrasing ('can be easily for them'). The sentence structures are mostly simple, with limited attempts at complex sentences. Punctuation and article usage are also inconsistent. A focus on basic sentence construction and proofreading for common errors would be highly beneficial.
