Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: causes (lengthy study, cost, desire for quick wealth) and effects (impact on society, closure of university departments). However, the development is somewhat superficial. The ideas are presented but lack depth and specific, well-explained examples. For instance, the mention of 'surveys' is vague and not fully integrated into an argument. The position is clear, but the overall analysis remains at a surface level, which limits the score. To improve, you should expand on the consequences for society, such as the long-term economic impact of a shortage of skilled professionals.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate, such as 'On the paradoxical side' and 'To commence with', which are used incorrectly in context. Referencing is sometimes unclear, making the flow between sentences feel disjointed. For example, the transition between the causes and the effects is abrupt. While there is an attempt at logical progression, the lack of precise linking words and the occasional misuse of cohesive devices hinder the overall flow of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is limited and often repetitive. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'doctor line', 'studying while', and 'fastly' (which is not a standard adverb). The range is sufficient to communicate basic ideas, but the lack of precision and the presence of non-standard phrasing prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on learning collocations (e.g., 'career path' instead of 'carrer option') and using more academic vocabulary to express complex ideas, rather than relying on basic, informal descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('learner’s interest... were declined'), incorrect verb forms ('This essay will intends'), and misuse of modal verbs ('should gave', 'should provide'). Sentence structures are mostly simple, and attempts at complex sentences are often faulty. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after periods and commas. To improve, you must focus on basic sentence construction, specifically ensuring that subjects and verbs agree and that verb tenses are used consistently throughout the essay.
