IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Nowadays, in many countries, not enough students are choosing science subjects at university. I think there are some reasons for this problem, and it also have some negative effects on society.
One main reason is that science subjects are very difficult. Students have to study maths, physics and chemistry, and these subjects need a lot of time and hard work. Many students feel stressed because they have many exams and difficult topics. Because of this, they choose other subjects like business, arts or law, which they think are easier. Another reason is that many young people want jobs that can give them quick success and more money. They believe jobs in business, social media or marketing are better than science jobs.
This problem can create many problems in society. First, there will be less doctors, scientists and engineers in the future. These people are very important because they help to make new medicines, improve technology and solve many problems. If there are not enough science graduates, it will be difficult for a country to grow and develop.
Another effect is that many companies may not find skilled workers. They may need to hire workers from other countries, and this can cost more money. For example, if there are not enough engineers, it will be hard to build new roads, factories and modern buildings. Also, new inventions may become slower because there are not enough people doing research.
In conclusion, many students do not choose science because it is difficult and they think other careers are easier and give better salaries. This can cause a shortage of skilled workers and slow the country's development. Therefore, governments and schools should encourage more students to study science by giving support, scholarships and better job opportunities in the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying both causes (difficulty of subjects, desire for quick financial success) and effects (shortage of professionals, economic stagnation). The ideas are relevant and logically extended, providing clear examples such as the need for engineers in infrastructure. The position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more nuanced analysis or specific real-world examples rather than general statements, but the current level of development is sufficient for a Band 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'Another reason', 'First', 'For example', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. The paragraphing is appropriate. While the use of cohesive devices is sometimes slightly repetitive, the overall structure is clear and coherent, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express ideas clearly. There is some use of topic-specific vocabulary such as 'skilled workers', 'research', and 'inventions'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and the student relies on simpler phrasing (e.g., 'very difficult', 'many problems'). To improve, the student should incorporate more precise, academic collocations and less common lexical items to demonstrate a wider range. The current performance is consistent with a Band 6.0, as the vocabulary is sufficient but lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While there are some minor errors, such as subject-verb agreement ('it also have' instead of 'it also has'), these do not impede communication. The punctuation is generally accurate, and the sentence structure is clear. To achieve a higher band, the student should aim for a greater variety of complex grammatical structures and ensure higher accuracy in basic agreement and tense usage. The current level reflects a solid control of basic grammar with some attempts at more complex forms.
