Student answer (Band 7.0)
The number of students that choose to pursue science in higher education is dropping. This issue raises concerns in many countries. This essay is going to look into the causes of the problem and its effects on society.
The main thing that pushes students to avoid sciences in their further education is the way that it is taught in schools. The educational system treats math and science differently from other subjects. It presents them as very challenging topics that are reserved only for geniuses. Therefore, many student develop a type of fear and hostility towards STEM related subjects from early on in their educational journey. In many schools, student report feeling oblivious and bored in math and science classes while enjoying other classes like arts or English language. This owes to the fact that most teachers in the scientific domain are very serious and focused in class. This behavior is understandable form the teaches as their subjects actually require more attention and mental presence. However this attitude makes some learners feel non-engaged and left-out which can repel them.
Not having enough students in STEM can have detrimental effects on a country's development. Having less students now means having less professionals in the future. So when the youth actively avoids pursuing science, it is imminent that one day society will suffer from a lack of doctors, engineers, architects and many more crucial professions. As a result, technological advancement would stall, hospitals wouldn't be as efficient and the modern way of life would become unsustainable. Furthermore, this issues harms the economy as whole industries would fail and logistics would be unreliable and unefficient.
In conclusion, students are repelled by sciences due to failure in the educational system and this issues would have a very negative impact on society if it remains unaddressed.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The essay addresses both parts of the prompt: causes (educational system/teaching style) and effects (societal/economic impact). The position is clear throughout. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, though the explanation of the causes could be slightly more nuanced. For example, the link between teacher behavior and student engagement is a good point, but it could be supported with more specific examples of how the curriculum itself contributes to the problem. Overall, the response covers all requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the causes from the effects. Cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'However', 'As a result', and 'Furthermore' are used to guide the reader through the argument. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to improve the overall cohesion. Referencing is clear, and the progression of ideas is logical throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning with some flexibility. There are attempts to use topic-specific terminology like 'STEM related subjects', 'technological advancement', and 'unsustainable'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and word-choice issues, such as 'oblivious' (which is used incorrectly here; 'disengaged' or 'confused' would be better) and 'unefficient' (which should be 'inefficient'). Despite these, the range is adequate for the task and communication is never impeded.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('many student develop', 'student report', 'this issues harms') and minor punctuation/spelling errors ('form the teaches', 'unefficient'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on proofreading for basic agreement and spelling errors, and attempt a wider variety of complex sentence structures with greater precision.
