IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?

Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, more and more people do not choose to study science at university, it is argued by some sectors of society that students are not interested in science and are not willing to choose science as their primary subject because they have right to choose other, while others argue that this is not fair to them, to society and to the future of country. I acknowledge that both approaches are practical and have their own importance. But I believe that the latter view is far beneficial and is a good approach.

The contemporary argument is that nowadays, the development in science is increasing so rapidly that advanced countries, for instance the United State is designing a force in space and they named it the USSF under the USAF, they acknowledge that this would help them to keep their hegemony alive for the next century. As a matter of fact, they are doing this, so they could keep eye on everything in order to spy other countries and they could never able to compete them.

Furthermore, currently the whole Europe is facing serious defense crisis due to the withdrawal of the American troops. Due to this shortage now, they are worried about the choice of students and there choice will harshly impact their lives even their existence because they are not advanced in this field of science.

The reason behind this might be their own lack of interest in science, higher merit of universities, high expense of universities and in worst cases students sell their blood to meet the expense of their college and one the biggest reason is that students nowadays do not like route study.

In conclusion, despite the valid reason placed by opponents regarding the right to choose, I am still convinced that the overarching benefits of science are more substantial.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt (causes and effects), but the development is uneven. The introduction is somewhat confused, as it sets up a debate about whether students should choose science rather than focusing on the causes and effects requested. The discussion on causes is brief and somewhat disjointed, mentioning financial issues and 'route study' without sufficient elaboration. The effects are focused heavily on military and defense issues, which is a narrow interpretation of the societal impact of a lack of science graduates. To improve, ensure each paragraph directly answers the prompt's specific questions and provides more balanced, logical support for your arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression is often hindered by awkward transitions and unclear sentence relationships. For example, the transition from the military discussion to the causes of the problem is abrupt. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Furthermore' and 'In conclusion', but they are sometimes applied mechanically or to connect ideas that do not flow naturally. The referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the argument's development. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would significantly enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for a higher band. There are instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'route study' (likely meaning 'rote learning') and 'keep eye on everything'. Some word choices are repetitive or imprecise, such as 'good approach' or 'valid reason'. While the student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary related to science and defense, the overall control is limited. To improve, focus on learning collocations and more sophisticated academic vocabulary to express complex ideas more accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'their choice will harshly impact'), incorrect verb forms (e.g., 'they could never able to compete'), and punctuation errors, particularly with comma splices in the introduction. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on sentence boundary control and ensuring consistent verb tense usage would be beneficial for future improvement.
