IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?

Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 8.5)

In many countries, the number of students enrolling in science courses at university has declined noticeably in recent years. This essay will examine the main reasons behind this trend and discuss its consequences for society.

There are several factors that discourage young people from pursuing science degrees. Firstly, science subjects are widely perceived as more difficult and demanding than alternatives such as business, media studies or the arts. Many students struggle with mathematics and abstract concepts at secondary school and therefore avoid courses that appear to require advanced analytical skills. Secondly, career prospects in other fields often seem more attractive. Graduates in finance, marketing or technology frequently secure high-paying jobs more quickly, while scientific careers may involve longer periods of study, lower starting salaries and less job security in the short term.

The effects of this shortage of science graduates are serious for society as a whole. One major consequence is a growing skills gap in key sectors such as healthcare, engineering, renewable energy and technology. Without sufficient numbers of qualified scientists and researchers, countries struggle to innovate and remain competitive in the global economy. For example, several European nations currently rely heavily on overseas specialists to fill positions in research laboratories and high-tech industries. In the longer term, reduced scientific capacity also slows progress on urgent challenges such as climate change, disease prevention and sustainable development. Societies become less able to generate evidence-based solutions and may fall behind nations that continue to invest strongly in scientific talent.

In conclusion, the decline in university science enrolment stems mainly from perceptions of difficulty, more appealing career alternatives and inadequate school teaching. These trends undermine innovation, economic strength and society’s ability to address complex problems. Encouraging more students to study science will therefore require both educational reforms and clearer communication of the value of scientific careers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

The response fully addresses both parts of the prompt: the causes (perceived difficulty and career prospects) and the effects (skills gaps and reduced innovation). The position is clear throughout, and the ideas are well-developed with relevant examples, such as the mention of European nations relying on overseas specialists. The essay maintains a consistent focus on the topic, providing a balanced and logical argument that meets all requirements of the task. The conclusion effectively synthesizes the main points, ensuring the response is cohesive and purposeful.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the causes and effects is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'One major consequence', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each section serving a distinct purpose. The flow of information is natural, and the relationship between ideas is clearly established, demonstrating a high level of control over the structure of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 8.0

The vocabulary is precise and appropriate for an academic context. The student uses a good range of topic-specific terminology, such as 'abstract concepts', 'analytical skills', 'skills gap', and 'evidence-based solutions'. The word choice is accurate and contributes to the clarity of the argument. While the vocabulary is consistently strong, it stays within a standard academic range rather than demonstrating the highly sophisticated or idiomatic control required for the highest band. Nevertheless, the range is more than sufficient to convey complex ideas with precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.5

The essay demonstrates a wide range of grammatical structures, including complex sentences with subordinate clauses and varied sentence beginnings. The control over grammar is excellent, with the majority of sentences being error-free. Punctuation is used correctly throughout, and there are no significant slips that impede communication. The use of modal verbs and conditional structures is accurate, supporting the analytical nature of the essay. The writing is fluent and demonstrates a high level of grammatical competence, consistent with the requirements for a high band score.
