In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
There are less than expected or necessary amount of incoming universities scholars taking science majors in many places around the globe. This can be contributable to the growing interest of young people in more financially encouraging subjects and the selectiveness of educational institutions in choosing their candidates. All of this can impact us in ways that can be concerning for our civilization.
As majors such as business administration or finance can offer better paying jobs after graduation, many talented students will naturally gravitate towards such programs. Furthermore, getting a post-graduate degrees in specific majors such as the MBA, the master of business administration, is a boost to an applicant's resume. In comparison, a young adult who takes a science-based course, such as biology, physics, or chemistry, will not necessarily see the kind of opportunities some students in other fields will receive.
Another reason to note is the difficulty of being admitted to a science program. Due to the strict and demanding form of science majors, institutions are averse to picking every students who apply. This forces the youth to not waste their hope on solely making it to such programs.
An decreasing number of students picking science on tertiary education level will build a less scientific world which will possess slower or worse critical thinking and analyzing skills. This will ultimately to a stagnation or decline in society. Science teaches people to observe, collect data, organize said information, analyze, and form conclusions. With this, it enables us to not only question everything around us but also to find answers and create things that improve our lives and the world we live in. Less science means that people will be less critical and curious of our surroundings. Due to this, less innovation will occur, resulting in a negative effects on human.
In conclusion, students choose other majors such as finance over science ones for the sake of opportunities for their careers, or they may abandon applying for scientific subjects due to fear of not being selected. All of this can have a bad impact on the civilization in the form of less curiosity and stagnation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the causes (financial incentives and admission difficulty) and the effects (stagnation and loss of critical thinking). The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed. However, the explanation regarding admission difficulty is slightly underdeveloped; the claim that institutions are 'averse to picking every student' is a bit vague and could have been supported with more specific reasoning regarding academic prerequisites or competitive entry requirements. Overall, the position is clear throughout, and the response provides a logical progression of ideas that fully satisfies the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'In comparison', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to link ideas. However, there are minor instances where the flow is slightly mechanical, and some referencing is a bit repetitive. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the causes from the effects, which helps the reader navigate the argument. The overall structure is coherent and supports the development of the essay.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary is generally sufficient and appropriate for the task. You use some good topic-specific terms like 'tertiary education', 'stagnation', and 'financially encouraging'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'contributable to' (should be 'attributable to'), 'incoming universities scholars' (should be 'university students'), and 'a decreasing number' (should be 'a decreasing number of students' or 'decreasing numbers'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. Expanding your range of academic collocations would further improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'getting a post-graduate degrees' (should be 'a degree'), 'every students' (should be 'every student'), and 'resulting in a negative effects' (should be 'a negative effect'). Additionally, the phrase 'This will ultimately to a stagnation' is missing a verb. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and article usage, and try to incorporate more varied complex sentence structures with greater precision.
