IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?

Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

These days, a decreasing number of students are choosing to study science at university. The causes might be that studying science is challenging and it usually requires higher degree. As a result, some fields may lack in scientific researchers and future generations might be influenced by this trend.

First and foremost, it must be admitted that learning science is more demanding and boring compared to majoring in other subjects, such as arts and literature. For instance, while students who study Chinese history spend their time reading a variety of articals and historical stories, learners who study science may have to carry out an experiment for long hours. Meanwhile, they might still face the possibility that their experiment might not make any sense. In addition to that, most job positions related to science, namely computer science and information technology, require higher degree and an excellent educational background, which suggests that students cannot ensure that they will gain employment security after studying for several years.

The number of young people who choose to study science can directly affect the number of scientific researchers who can contribute their theoretical knowledge to scientific fields. For example, the advancement of artificial intelligence is the most popular topic in today's world, whereas this industry demand a significant of engineers to operate the system. In other words, if educational system cannot provide sufficient students in scientific field, the general public's everyday life will be heavily impacted, as we have been relying on various AI-powered tools. Additionally, only if governments proactively introduce policies, which encourage students to study science, can they ensure that we will still have enough researchers in the future because younger generations may make decisions based on observing the pupolarity of this major.

In conclusion, as a result of a stressful academic environment and a competitive job market, fewer young people are choosing to study science. This may cause related industries to have insufficient employees and a lack of scientific researchers in the future.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy7.0
Overall7.0

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed both parts of the prompt: the causes (difficulty of the subject and high degree requirements) and the effects (shortage of researchers and impact on society). Your position is clear throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, ensure your ideas are more fully developed. For example, when discussing the 'boring' nature of science, you could expand on why this perception exists beyond just the time spent on experiments. Additionally, the link between the lack of students and the impact on AI development is a strong point, but it could be supported with more specific detail regarding how society suffers when innovation stalls.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'In addition to that', and 'In other words' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be more precise. For instance, in the second paragraph, the transition between the difficulty of science and the job market requirements is a bit abrupt. Improving the flow between sentences within paragraphs would help create a more seamless progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'theoretical knowledge', 'proactively', and 'employment security'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'demand a significant of engineers' (should be 'demands a significant number of engineers') and 'higher degree' (should be 'higher degrees' or 'advanced degrees'). While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more sophisticated, topic-specific collocations would elevate your score. Focus on using precise academic terminology rather than general descriptive words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional sentence in the third paragraph ('only if governments proactively introduce policies... can they ensure...'). While you show good control, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'this industry demand' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'articals' (spelling error). Additionally, some phrasing is slightly awkward, like 'may not make any sense'. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not impede communication. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help you move into the higher bands.
