IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?

Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

In many countries, fewer students are choosing science subjects at university. This is becoming a common problem and it can affect the future of society. There are several reasons for this trend, and it also has some negative effects.

One of the main reasons is that science subjects are considered difficult. Students have to study subjects like physics, chemistry and mathematics, which require a lot of time and hard work. Because of this, many students prefer courses such as business or arts, which they think are easier. Another reason is that some science jobs need many years of education before people can earn a good salary. As a result, students choose careers that provide quicker income.

This situation can have several effects on society. Firstly, there may not be enough scientists, doctors and engineers in the future. These professionals are important for developing new technology, improving healthcare and solving environmental problems. If there are fewer science graduates, a country may depend on other nations for scientific research and innovation. This can slow down the development of country.

For example, many developing countries already face a shortage of skilled scientists, which affects research and industrial growth. If this problem continue, it will become more difficult to meet future challenges and improve people's quality of life.

In conclusion, students avoid science because it is difficult and takes a long time to complete. Although this choice may seem better for individuals, it can create serious problems for society in the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: causes and effects. The ideas are relevant and logically presented. However, the essay is slightly under the 250-word minimum, which impacts the depth of development. While the points regarding difficulty and financial return are clear, they could be expanded with more specific examples or nuanced analysis to reach a higher band. The position is clear throughout, but the brevity prevents a fully developed argument. Because the word count is just under the requirement, this is a minor penalty in Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is logical. Cohesive devices such as 'One of the main reasons', 'As a result', and 'Firstly' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow of information is smooth. To improve, you could incorporate a wider variety of cohesive devices to avoid repetitive structures and ensure that the transition between the causes and effects is even more seamless.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. You use topic-specific terms like 'scientific research', 'innovation', and 'industrial growth' correctly. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler vocabulary (e.g., 'difficult', 'good salary', 'important'). To reach a higher band, you should aim to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and less common lexical items. For instance, instead of 'difficult', you could use 'academically demanding' or 'rigorous'. The current range is sufficient but lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a good control of basic grammar and a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the meaning is always clear. There is a minor error in the sentence 'If this problem continue', which should be 'continues'. You have used complex sentences effectively, such as 'Although this choice may seem better for individuals, it can create serious problems'. To improve, ensure consistent subject-verb agreement and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as passive voice or conditional forms, to demonstrate greater grammatical flexibility.
