IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
A lot of students are not interested in science-related subjects in universities of different nations. There are several factors associated with this issue, such as a lack of research opportunities, the high cost and long duration of degrees, and a lack of personal interest and motivation. It has a negative impact on society.
In developing countries, the least number of students choose science as a subject in university. There are multiple causes of this problem. First, the higher education sector is not allocating a budget for science laboratories. Due to low finances, the laboratory does not have enough resources to facilitate their children's needs. Lacking lab equipment, students face difficulties in their research. Secondly, people in underdeveloping nations are more financially burdened. They do not have money for children's education.
Thirdly, students are not motivated. They do not have goals in their lives and waste their time in different activities.
It has a bad impact on the progress of nations.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 160 words. This significantly impacts the development of ideas. While the essay identifies causes such as lack of funding and motivation, and mentions the impact on society, these points are under-developed and lack sufficient supporting evidence or examples. The task requires a more thorough exploration of both causes and effects. Because the response is substantially under-length, the depth of analysis is limited, preventing a higher score. To improve, you must expand on each point with specific examples and ensure the essay meets the required length to fully address all parts of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into short paragraphs, which helps with the overall structure. You use some cohesive devices like 'First', 'Secondly', and 'Thirdly' to sequence your points. However, the progression of ideas is somewhat mechanical, and the connection between sentences could be smoother. The introduction is very brief and does not fully set up the essay's direction. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence followed by supporting details that flow logically into one another.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but remains quite basic. Phrases like 'a lot of students', 'bad impact', and 'waste their time' are repetitive and lack the precision expected at higher bands. There is little attempt to use less common or academic vocabulary. To improve, focus on incorporating more precise academic collocations and synonyms. For example, instead of 'bad impact', use 'detrimental consequences' or 'adverse effects'. Expanding your range of vocabulary will help you express your ideas more effectively and professionally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'the least number of students choose science' (which is slightly awkward phrasing) and 'facilitate their children's needs' (when referring to students). Punctuation is generally correct, but the range of structures is limited. To improve, try to incorporate more complex sentence forms, such as conditional sentences or relative clauses, and pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and article usage to reduce the frequency of errors.
