IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
These days, a decreasing number of students are choosing to study science at university. The causes might be that studying science is challenging and it usually requires a higher degree. As a result, some fields may lack in scientific researchers and future generations might be influenced by this trend.
First and foremost, it must be admitted that learning science is more demanding and tedious compared to majoring in other subjects, such as arts and literature. For instance, while students who study Chinese history spend their time reading a variety of articles and historical stories, learners who study science may have to carry out an experiment for long hours. Meanwhile, they might still face the possibility that their experiment might not make any sense. In addition to that, most job positions related to science, namely computer science and information technology, require a higher degree and an excellent educational background, which suggests that students cannot ensure that they will gain employment security after studying for several years.
The number of young people who choose to study science can directly affect the number of scientific researchers who can contribute their theoretical knowledge to scientific fields. For example, the advancement of artificial intelligence is the most popular topic in today's world, whereas this industry demands a significant number of engineers to operate the system. In other words, if the educational system cannot provide sufficient students in the scientific field, the general public's everyday life will be heavily impacted, as we have been relying on various AI-powered tools. Additionally, only if governments proactively introduce policies, which encourage students to study science, can they ensure that we will still have enough researchers in the future because younger generations may make decisions based on observing the popularity of this major.
In conclusion, as a result of a stressful academic environment and a competitive job market, fewer young people are choosing to study science. This may cause related industries to have insufficient employees and a lack of scientific researchers in the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: causes (difficulty of the subject, high degree requirements) and effects (shortage of researchers, impact on AI-driven society). The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed. The position is clear throughout, and the arguments are supported with logical examples, such as the comparison between history and science students. To reach a higher band, the analysis could be slightly more nuanced, perhaps by exploring the societal effects beyond just the professional sphere, but the current development is sufficient for a strong score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'In addition to that', and 'In other words' are used effectively to link ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the causes from the effects. The flow is smooth, and the relationship between sentences is clear, demonstrating a good command of organizational features.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary is adequate and generally precise. You demonstrate the ability to use topic-specific terminology such as 'scientific researchers', 'theoretical knowledge', and 'AI-powered tools'. There are some minor collocations that could be more natural, such as 'make any sense' (which is slightly informal) or 'lack in scientific researchers'. However, the range is sufficient to convey complex ideas clearly, and there are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There is good control over complex forms, such as the conditional structure 'only if governments proactively introduce policies... can they ensure'. While there are occasional minor errors, such as 'lack in scientific researchers' (should be 'lack of') or 'make any sense' (could be 'yield no results'), the majority of your sentences are error-free. Punctuation is generally accurate, and the grammatical control is consistent throughout the essay.
