Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: causes (cost, difficulty, workload) and effects (healthcare shortages, service accessibility). However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive. For instance, the discussion on 'high expense' is mentioned in both the introduction and the body paragraphs without adding significant new depth. While the position is clear, the explanation of the effects on society could be more nuanced; it focuses heavily on healthcare, which limits the scope of the argument. To improve, ensure each paragraph introduces a distinct, well-supported point rather than restating the same ideas in different words.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In addition', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel mechanical or slightly forced. The referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'This may have damaging impact', where the antecedent is vague. Additionally, the flow between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother; some sentences feel like a list of points rather than a cohesive argument. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring clear pronoun references would elevate the score.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'merit criteria', 'financially stable', and 'healthcare problem'. However, there is a reliance on basic or repetitive phrasing, such as 'high expense' and 'study subjects'. Some word choices are slightly unnatural, such as 'mange these issues' (likely meant 'manage') and 'least number of students' (which is grammatically awkward). To reach a higher band, the student should focus on more precise collocations and a wider range of academic vocabulary to avoid repetition.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow, such as 'do not able to afford' (should be 'are not able to afford'), 'what why' (a redundant construction), and 'the least number of students' (which is logically incorrect). Subject-verb agreement and article usage are inconsistent throughout the text. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for common errors like missing 'be' verbs would be highly beneficial.
