IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
In this modern era, many students tend to choosing arts or finances related subjects instead of science at university. Several factors are working for this tendency among students all over the world. This essay will examine the primary reasons why fewer students are selecting science and the impact this shortage has on society.
To begin with, the major reasons why students are less interested in science at university is that it is expensive. Students who came from low or middle class families cannot afford high tuition fees at university. Multiple universities charged 15,000 to 70,000 dollars for one academic year, which is costly for low and middle class families. For example, tuition fees to study at Massachusetts Institute of Technology are usually 66,000 dollars per year, which applies to all science related subjects. Therefore, it is nightmare to study science for a student who belongs to a low or middle class family.
Due to the low number of students pursuing science at university, society may face several negative consequences. One of the most significant effects is a shortage of skilled professionals such as scientists, engineers, doctors, and researchers. As a result, countries may struggle to develop new technologies, improve healthcare systems, and solve complex environmental problems. For example, a lack of qualified researchers can slow the development of life-saving medicines and innovative solutions to climate change. Therefore, the declining interest in science education can hinder both economic growth and overall social progress.
In conclusion, students are becoming less interested in studying science mainly because it is academically demanding and requires a long-term commitment. As a result, society may experience a shortage of skilled professionals, which could slow scientific progress, technological innovation, and economic development.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the causes (cost) and the effects (shortage of professionals). The position is clear throughout. However, the development is somewhat uneven. While the impact on society is well-explained, the causes are limited to a single point—financial burden—which is then contradicted in the conclusion by a mention of 'academically demanding' work, a point not previously discussed in the body paragraphs. To reach a higher band, ensure that all points mentioned in the conclusion are fully developed in the body paragraphs and provide a more comprehensive range of causes, such as career prospects or societal perceptions of science.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Due to', 'As a result', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is appropriate, with each paragraph focusing on a central theme. However, the transition between the body paragraphs and the conclusion could be smoother, particularly because the conclusion introduces a new idea ('academically demanding') that was not explored in the body. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate and appropriate for the task. You use topic-specific terms like 'tuition fees', 'skilled professionals', and 'innovative solutions' correctly. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'finances related subjects' (should be 'finance-related') and 'working for this tendency' (should be 'contributing to this trend'). While the range is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, it lacks the more sophisticated, less common lexical items that would elevate the response to a higher band. Focusing on more precise collocations will improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'tend to choosing' (should be 'tend to choose') and 'Multiple universities charged' (should be 'charge' for a general fact). Additionally, 'Students who came from' should be 'come from' to maintain consistent tense. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, aim for greater accuracy in subject-verb agreement and verb tense consistency when discussing general truths versus specific examples.
