Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: causes (fear of failure, financial constraints) and effects (impact on economic growth and innovation). However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation regarding 'financial support' is a bit repetitive, and the link between the lack of science students and the specific economic consequences could be more deeply explored with more precise examples. While the position is clear, the supporting arguments lack the depth required for a higher band score. The essay covers all requirements of the task, but the analysis remains at a somewhat superficial level.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'In contrast', though some transitions feel mechanical or slightly unnatural (e.g., 'To elaborate it'). The progression of ideas is generally clear, but there are instances where the flow is interrupted by awkward phrasing or grammatical errors that make the relationship between sentences less smooth. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the causes from the effects, which helps the reader follow the structure of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety expected at higher levels. There are several instances of word-choice errors and non-standard collocations, such as 'prevent their cognitive cultivate' and 'they are confuse about math steps'. The range is sufficient to communicate the main points, but the student struggles to use less common lexical items accurately. Spelling errors, such as 'chemisty' and 'tution', also occur. To improve, the student should focus on learning word families and common collocations related to academic and economic topics.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'parents are not give them' (subject-verb agreement), 'effects would be appear' (passive voice misuse), and 'it is highly impact' (incorrect verb form). While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar—such as verb tense, article usage, and sentence construction—prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. The student needs to focus on basic sentence structure and proofreading for common grammatical slips.
