IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?

Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Science was a popular study program among university students in last decade. In many countries fewer number of students are selecting science as a study program at the higher education institutes.

There are several reasons to not choosing the science. Firstly, there is lack of science related jobs in job market. Plenty of jobs are replaced by robots and machines . Artificial intelligence is also a nightmare for science graduates. It has taken jobs of hundreds of software engineers and IT professionals. For instance, my cousin was a software engineer in a well reputed company . He worked there for three years . Unfortunately, he was terminated from his job in last May. Because AI has replaced him. Secondly, trade skills jobs are most demanding nowadays. Moreover, these jobs are more rewarding than white collar jobs . Therefore people choose to learn different skills instead of study science in the university.

Society will see the consequences of this shift in upcoming years. Mostly the science graduates are behind the inventions and discoveries which we see today. If students disregard the study of science we will see a gradual decrease in new innovations and technologies in every field. For example, Apple company is a giant player in technology and innovation field. Steve Jobs founded this company back in late 1900s. If he choose to take arts instead of science in his university most probably we could not see the Macbooks and Iphones now.

I conclude that the decrease in choosing science as a study program is caused by alternatives like robot and AI and also science jobs are less rewarding . But it can cause challenges in societies like less scientific inventions.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the causes for the decline in science students and the effects on society. The ideas are relevant, such as the impact of AI on job security and the loss of innovation. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The argument regarding 'trade skills' is introduced but not fully explored in relation to the decline in science enrollment. The example of the cousin is a bit anecdotal, and the link between Steve Jobs and the hypothetical scenario is slightly simplistic. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is more thoroughly explained with a stronger logical connection to the main topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'Therefore', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences could be improved to sound more natural. For instance, the transition between the discussion of AI and the shift to trade skills is abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between ideas would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their ideas clearly. There are some attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'innovations', 'technologies', and 'higher education institutes'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'fewer number of students' (should be 'a smaller number of students') and 'trade skills jobs are most demanding' (should be 'in high demand'). The range is somewhat limited, and the essay relies on fairly common vocabulary. To improve, the student should focus on using more precise collocations and a wider variety of academic terminology.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the science', 'the higher education'), verb tenses ('in last decade', 'If he choose'), and sentence fragments ('Because AI has replaced him'). These errors are noticeable but do not significantly impede communication. The use of punctuation is generally acceptable, but there are some issues with spacing and capitalization. To achieve a higher score, the student needs to focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, as well as reducing the frequency of basic grammatical slips.
